One more suggestion based on my experience - after I used Claimyr to get through to a rep, I learned my claim was held up because I had accidentally answered YES to the question about being out of my authorized work area during one week's certification. I didn't even remember doing this! The agent was able to correct it on the spot. Double-check all your past certifications if possible to see if you might have made a similar mistake along the way.
This is excellent advice. One wrong answer during weekly certification can place an indefinite hold on your claim. Common mistakes include answering yes to questions about: - Being unavailable for work - Traveling outside your work search area - Refusing job offers - Not conducting work search activities Even if you correct it later, the system often keeps the hold until a representative manually releases it.
I finally got through to someone!!! After 3+ hours on hold today. Turns out my claim was flagged for "additional wage verification" because I had worked in both NY and NJ last year. They never notified me about needing additional documents! The agent released the hold and said I should receive all my backpay within 3-5 business days. I'm cautiously optimistic but won't believe it until I see the money. Thank you all for your help and suggestions during this nightmare!
That's great news! Multi-state employment issues are increasingly common and often go unnoticed until someone manually reviews the claim. Make sure to keep checking your payment history over the next week. If you don't see movement in 5 business days, call back immediately - sometimes they need to manually release each weekly payment.
I think everyone's missing the real problem here - the entire NY unemployment system is DELIBERATELY DESIGNED to be impossible to navigate. They WANT people to give up so they don't have to pay benefits. It's been this way for years, and they have no incentive to fix it because frustrated people eventually stop trying. It's not a broken system - it's working exactly as intended.
While I understand the frustration, there's no evidence the system is deliberately designed to fail. Most problems stem from outdated technology infrastructure and understaffing rather than malicious intent. The 2025 budget actually includes significant funding to modernize these systems, though implementation will take time.
Ha! They've been promising to "modernize" for YEARS. Remember the "improved" system they rolled out in 2023? Made things even WORSE! And notice how all these "technical difficulties" always seem to prevent people from getting money, never from filing their weekly certifications? Funny how that works...
Thanks everyone for your responses and suggestions! After all this hassle, my card finally arrived today - almost 3 weeks after I was approved. For anyone else dealing with KeyBank card issues, I'm going to try their direct line next time like @profile1 suggested. And I've set up direct deposit as a backup like @profile4 recommended. This whole system is so frustrating, but at least we can help each other navigate it!
All of this is BY DESIGN! They deliberately make it confusing and slow so people give up and don't get the money they're owed. I bet thousands of people think that little extra on their regular refund WAS the unemployment adjustment and will never follow up. Meanwhile the state keeps MILLIONS that should be going back to workers who were laid off. CRIMINAL!
While the process is certainly frustrating, I want to clarify that these adjustments are actually being processed automatically - you don't have to apply or follow up to receive what you're owed. The separate processing and letter system is actually meant to provide clear documentation of the adjustment for your records. The delays are unfortunate but primarily due to understaffing rather than intentional withholding.
Update: My letter finally arrived yesterday! Says I'll be getting $362 back for the unemployment tax adjustment, and it should arrive within 2-3 weeks. I filed my taxes in mid-March, so it took almost exactly 12 weeks for them to process the adjustment. Hope this helps anyone still waiting - hang in there!
UPDATE: I got through the ID.me verification! For anyone else stuck with this issue, here's what worked: 1. I used Chrome in incognito mode 2. Failed the facial recognition twice 3. Found the "Need help verifying your identity?" link at the bottom 4. Waited about 1 hour in the video chat queue 5. Verified with an agent who was actually very helpful My NY unemployment claim is now processing again. Thank you to everyone who helped with advice!
That's great news! Glad it finally worked out for you. Did they give any explanation for why the facial recognition was failing?
I'm having the EXACT same issue but with a twist - I got through ID.me verification but now my NYSDOL account says they can't confirm my identity!? So I'm verified but also not verified? Has anyone else had this happen? I'm so confused and scared I'll never get my benefits...
That happened to me too! There's actually a second verification process that happens on NYSDOL's end after ID.me. This is where calling them directly helps - they need to manually confirm the ID.me verification went through. The Claimyr service I mentioned earlier can get you through to them quickly instead of spending days redialing.

One last thing to try: the NYSDOL has a Twitter account (@NYSLabor) where they sometimes respond to people having issues. Some folks have had success sending them a direct message with their contact info (never include your SSN or claim ID in public tweets). Worth a shot while pursuing the other avenues mentioned.

•I'll try that too! At this point I'm willing to try anything. Thanks everyone for all your suggestions. I'm going to: 1. Contact my state rep/senator 2. Try that Claimyr service to get through by phone 3. Send a DM to the NYSDOL Twitter 4. Look into visiting an office in person I'll update if any of these work!

Quick update: I actually got mine resolved finally. Called using that service I mentioned, got through to someone who told me my claim had been stuck because they needed proof I'd been searching for work, but the notification never got sent to me due to a "system error." Once I uploaded my job search records, my claim was approved within a week and I got all my backpay. The whole thing could have been resolved in 5 minutes if I could have just gotten someone on the phone months ago. The system is beyond broken.

•Thank you for the update! That gives me hope that mine might be something simple too. I'm definitely going to try getting through to a human somehow this week. I've been documenting all my job searches just in case, so I have that ready if they need it.
