I won my appeal for unemployment now what - NYS Department of Labor next steps?
Just got the decision letter that I won my unemployment appeal! It's been 8 weeks since my initial disqualification and I'm so relieved. But now I'm confused about what happens next. The letter says my benefits are approved but doesn't really explain the process from here. Do I need to file new weekly claims or will they backpay everything automatically? My claim status on my.ny.gov still shows the old disqualification. Should I be worried about that? Also wondering if there's anything special I need to do about the job search requirements since I've been looking this whole time anyway. Any advice would be appreciated!

Congratulations on winning your appeal! The system usually takes 2-3 business days to update your claim status after an appeal decision. You should continue filing your weekly claims as normal - don't skip any weeks. The backpay should process automatically once the system updates, but it can take up to 2 weeks for the payments to actually hit your account. Keep documentation of your job search activities during the appeal period since NYS Department of Labor may ask for verification.

•Thank you! Should I be filing weekly claims even though my account still shows disqualified? I don't want to mess anything up.

Yes definitely keep filing! I won my appeal last year and made the mistake of not filing for two weeks thinking the system would handle everything. Had to call and explain the gap later which was a nightmare. The job search requirement kicks back in immediately so make sure you're doing your 3 work search activities per week.

•Good to know about the job search requirements. I've been keeping track anyway but wasn't sure if the appeal period counted differently.

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to check on the status or backpay processing, I recently used claimyr.com to actually reach an agent. They have this system that calls you back when an agent is available instead of waiting on hold forever. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Was able to get clarity on my payment timeline after winning my appeal - turned out there was a small issue that needed manual review.

•How much does that service cost? I've been trying to call for days about my own appeal status.

•The value is definitely worth it when you consider how much time you save not sitting on hold. Way easier than the regular callback system that never seems to work.

ugh the system is SO slow to update after appeals its ridiculous!! took almost 3 weeks for my backpay to show up even though i won my appeal. keep filing weekly claims no matter what the website says

Just wanted to add that if your appeal was for a voluntary quit disqualification, make sure you understand the ongoing work search requirements. Sometimes people think winning the appeal means they're exempt from job searching, but that's not the case. You'll need to document 3 work search activities each week and be able and available for work.

•Mine was actually for misconduct charges that weren't valid. But good point about the work search - I'll make sure to keep detailed records.
