ugh the whole system is so confusing!! i got denied twice before finally getting approved and still dont really understand why. they make it so hard for people who actually need help
You can request a copy of your employer's response to the NYS Department of Labor through the appeals process. If there's a discrepancy between what they told you versus what they reported, that's definitely grounds for an appeal. You have 30 days from the determination date to file an appeal hearing request.
THIS IS EXACTLY WHY MINIMUM WAGE HIKES ARE STUPID!!! Politicians don't understand basic economics and then act surprised when unemployment goes up. Now we're all fighting for fewer jobs while they pat themselves on the back for 'helping workers.
UGH the whole NYS Department of Labor system is a JOKE! They never explain anything clearly and expect you to just figure it out. I've been fighting with them for months about my benefit calculation and they keep giving me different answers every time I call. The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing over there!
Don't forget that your benefits might be subject to taxes too! I didn't realize that when I first started collecting and it was a surprise at tax time. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your weekly payments through your my.ny.gov account settings.
Same boat here! Got my approval but the paperwork is like reading hieroglyphics. Why can't they just send you a simple letter that says 'You get $X per week for Y weeks' instead of all this legal jargon??

The whole thing is BROKEN! I've been partially unemployed for 6 months, working random gig work to survive, but according to their statistics I'm 'employed' because I worked 3 hours last week. Meanwhile my neighbor gave up looking for work after 8 months of rejections and now he doesn't exist in their numbers either. How can they make policy decisions based on data that's this messed up?

This reminds me of when I was going through my divorce and had to take whatever work I could find. I was doing door dash and uber maybe 15 hours a week total, reporting it on my weekly claims like you're supposed to, but I was definitely still unemployed in any meaningful sense. Couldn't afford my rent, had to move back with my parents. But hey, technically employed according to NYS Department of Labor statistics! The system just wasn't designed for the modern gig economy where people patch together multiple part-time things just to survive.

•Your experience highlights exactly why employment statistics can be misleading. The current measurement framework was designed decades ago for a different job market structure.
