Can I get New York Unemployment after quitting to be a stay at home parent?

Need to know if I can get unemployment after quitting my job due to becoming a caregiver. My partner got sick and I had to take care of the kids at home. Left my job back in October, been looking for work since then. Anyone know if being a caregiver counts as a valid reason to quit?

Depends on how you document everything. You need to prove it was a necessity not just a choice. Did you try to work something out with your employer first? Like FMLA or modified schedule? They look at all that stuff when reviewing your claim.

yea unfortunately not trying FMLA first might hurt your case. They usually want to see you tried to keep your job b4 quitting

Hey, I was stuck trying to reach unemployment about a similar situation. I found this site claimyr.com that calls and waits on hold, then connects you when someone picks up. Costs $20 but totally worth it. Here's a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Listen up - here's the deal with quitting for caregiving in NY: - You MUST prove it was a compelling family responsibility - Need documentation of your partner's condition - Should show you had no reasonable alternatives - Being a primary caregiver can qualify as good cause - Looking for work is essential - keep detailed records - October quit date is fine, but file ASAP Best bet is to talk directly to an agent. Use claimyr.com to get through - way better than trying to call yourself. They'll review your specific situation and tell you if you qualify. Keep ALL documentation showing why this was necessary. Medical records, attempts to find alternative care, everything. The more proof the better.
