Can I get New York Unemployment after quitting to care for sick parent in NJ?
I quit my accounting job because I needed to take care of my sick parent in New Jersey. I tried reducing my hours from 40 to 25 but they kept the same workload. I have doctor's documentation showing I'm the designated caretaker. Anyone know if I can get unemployment in this situation? Not sure if I should even bother applying since I quit voluntarily.

Yes you can apply! This counts as good cause for leaving your job. Make sure to upload all your medical documentation and caregiver paperwork when you file. You'll probably need to explain your situation in a phone interview but thats normal.

β’rules changed recently for caregivers. they're more lenient now especially with proper documentation

Found a way to actually get someone on the phone at ny unemployment - used claimyr.com. Its this service that calls and waits on hold then connects you when someone picks up. Costs $20 but worked for me. Check out their video here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Listen up, I was in EXACTLY your situation last year and got approved. Here's what you need to know: First, document EVERYTHING. Get detailed doctors notes showing why your care is necessary. Have proof you tried to make it work with reduced hours first. You'll need a timeline of events. When you apply online, select 'compelling family reasons' as your reason for leaving. They'll schedule a phone interview. Be ready to explain everything clearly. BTW getting through to them is a nightmare but I used claimyr.com to get someone on the phone - totally worth it. Don't let anyone tell you you cant get benefits - caregiver responsibilities are protected if documented properly! π―

Make sure your moving to NJ permanently or they might deny you. They're weird about out of state stuff.
