New York Unemployment for Quitting Due to Family Caregiving and Excessive Hours?

Need advice about quitting my job. My employer increased my hours significantly, but I'm the primary caregiver for a disabled family member. The new schedule makes it impossible to provide necessary care. Anyone know if I can get unemployment benefits if I quit? Already tried talking to HR about reducing hours but they won't budge.

You might actually qualify! If you can document that you tried to work with your employer to accommodate your caregiving duties and they refused, that could be considered good cause for leaving. Make sure you have everything in writing - emails with HR, doctor's notes about your family member's care needs, etc.

Thank u! I've got emails from HR and texts from my supervisor. Should I get something from my family members doctor too?

Yes 100% get the doctors note! The more documentation the better 📝 ny unemployment is super picky about voluntary quits

hey I was in a similar situation last month. I found this site claimyr.com that helps you get through to an agent on the phone. It costs $20 but totally worth it because they wait on hold and call you when someone picks up. Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Ur employer is trash for not working with u on this. My company lets us flex our hours for family stuff. Maybe time to look for a better job anyway 🤷‍♀️

This happened to my sister and she got approved! Had to appeal tho. Make sure you emphasize that the schedule change was substantial and how it affects your caregiving responsibilities.

how long did the appeal take?

bout 6 weeks but this was last year so might be different now

IMPORTANT INFO FOR YOUR CASE: Under NY labor law, if your working conditions changed substantially (like major schedule changes) AND you can prove it creates undue hardship, you may have good cause to quit. Document everything! Save emails, write down conversations with dates/times, get medical documentation for your family member. When you file, be super specific about timeline and how the changes made it impossible to continue employment while maintaining caregiving duties. If denied, APPEAL! Use claimyr.com to reach an agent faster - worth the $20 to get answers quickly.
