New York Unemployment for Quitting Due to Family Caregiving and Excessive Hours?
Need advice about quitting my job. My employer increased my hours significantly, but I'm the primary caregiver for a disabled family member. The new schedule makes it impossible to provide necessary care. Anyone know if I can get unemployment benefits if I quit? Already tried talking to HR about reducing hours but they won't budge.

You might actually qualify! If you can document that you tried to work with your employer to accommodate your caregiving duties and they refused, that could be considered good cause for leaving. Make sure you have everything in writing - emails with HR, doctor's notes about your family member's care needs, etc.

Ur employer is trash for not working with u on this. My company lets us flex our hours for family stuff. Maybe time to look for a better job anyway 🤷♀️

Also check if your employer has FMLA obligations - if they have 50+ employees and you've worked there a year, they might have been required to offer you unpaid leave or schedule accommodations for family caregiving. If they violated FMLA by not even considering accommodations, that strengthens your unemployment case even more. Document that they didn't offer any alternatives before you quit!

If they didn t'inform you of your rights when you requested accommodations, that s'a violation. Keep records of when you asked HR for help and what their exact response was. The Department of Labor has info on FMLA requirements you can reference too. This could definitely help your unemployment case if they failed to follow federal law!
