Can I get PA UC after quitting my job 2 weeks ago as a single mom?
Hi everyone, I'm in a tough spot and need advice. I walked out of my job 2 weeks ago and never returned. The working conditions were awful (60+ hour weeks with no overtime) and my manager kept changing my schedule last minute which made childcare impossible as a single mom. I literally just stopped showing up because I was at my breaking point. I know quitting usually disqualifies you from unemployment but I've heard there are exceptions. Has anyone successfully claimed PA unemployment after quitting for family reasons? My savings are almost gone and I'm getting desperate.

Sorry but ur probably not gonna qualify. PA UC is pretty strict about voluntarily quitting. You needed to try to fix the situation first before leaving - like documenting convos with HR or your boss about the schedule issues. They consider it "voluntary quit without cause" if you just stop showing up.

•I was afraid of that... I wish I had known to document everything. I did text my boss about the scheduling problems several times. Would that count as documentation?

The previous response isn't entirely accurate. You *might* qualify if you can prove you had a "necessitous and compelling reason" to quit. Being a single parent with unpredictable schedule changes affecting childcare could potentially qualify, but you'll need to document everything thoroughly. You'll definitely face an eligibility interview where you'll need to explain why you left. Be prepared to provide evidence of the scheduling problems and how they made it impossible to arrange childcare. Just stopping showing up (job abandonment) makes it harder, but not impossible if your reasons were legitimate.

•Thank you for giving me some hope! I do have text messages showing the last-minute schedule changes. My daycare also has a policy requiring 24hr notice for extended hours, which I couldn't meet with these surprise shifts. Would that help my case?

•I didn't go to HR (small company, no real HR dept) but I did text my boss multiple times about needing consistent hours for childcare. I kept those texts. I'm worried about waiting 4 months though... I don't have that kind of savings :

THE SYSTEM IS TOTALLY RIGGED AGAINST WORKING PARENTS!!! I went through this EXACT same thing last year and PA UC denied me even though I had NO CHOICE but to quit. My kids school called CPS on me because I kept having to leave them alone when work changed my hours!!! The interview people DO NOT CARE about your situation they just follow their stupid rulebook.

•While I understand your frustration, I want to clarify that PA UC referees do consider childcare issues, but they're bound by specific legal standards. The key factors are: 1) Did you exhaust all alternatives before quitting? 2) Did you communicate the problem to your employer? 3) Was the scheduling truly unpredictable or impossible to accommodate? Each case is evaluated individually, and many parents do successfully appeal initial denials with proper documentation.

You should apply anyway because the worst they can say is no. But, I had a similar situation when I had to quit because my employer kept changing my hours and I have a special needs child. I was denied at first, but I appealed and won. Here's what worked for me: 1) Texts/emails showing I tried to resolve the schedule issues 2) Letter from my child's doctor about care requirements 3) Documentation from daycare about their policies 4) Timeline showing the unreasonable schedule changes The big thing is you have to show you tried to resolve it before quitting. Even though you just stopped showing up, if you have those texts about scheduling problems, that might help your case. Be 100% honest in your interview.

•Thank you so much for this detailed advice! I do have texts and the daycare policy. My child doesn't have special needs but I documented how the last minute changes affected me financially (had to pay late fees, etc). I'll definitely apply and be honest about my situation.

I've had success appealing a similar situation but getting through to anyone at PA UC was a nightmare!!! Busy signals for weeks. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual human at PA UC. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2. It saved me so much frustration when I needed to explain my documentation during the appeal process.

•Yes! I was skeptical too but after trying for 3 weeks on my own I was desperate. Got through in about 30 mins after using it.

UC Claims Examiner here (though not speaking in any official capacity). Here's what you need to know about your situation: 1. PA considers "voluntary quit without good cause" disqualifying, but childcare issues CAN qualify as "necessitous and compelling" reasons if properly documented. 2. The fact that you abandoned the job rather than properly resigning complicates your case but doesn't automatically disqualify you. 3. You'll need to establish: - The schedule changes were unpredictable and substantial - You made reasonable efforts to solve the problem before quitting - Continued employment would have caused a real hardship 4. Documentation is critical: texts, emails, childcare policies, anything showing the conflict between your work schedule and parental responsibilities. 5. Be prepared for questions about why you didn't give notice. Apply now so you're in the system, answer everything truthfully, and gather all your evidence for the inevitable interview/determination.

•Thank you so much for this expert insight. I'll start gathering everything today. Should I also get something in writing from my daycare confirming the late fees and their notification policy? And is there anything specific I should emphasize during the interview about why I didn't give notice?

•Yes, documentation from your daycare would be very helpful. Regarding not giving notice, be honest but frame it in terms of reaching a breaking point after trying to resolve the scheduling issues. Emphasize that you did attempt to address the problems before leaving (your texts). Avoid using emotional language like "I was fed up" and instead focus on the specific hardship: "I had no childcare options available with such short notice and couldn't leave my child unattended."

OP did u ever try asking for a set schedule? my friend got denied cuz they said she should have asked for accommodation first before quitting

•Yes, I asked multiple times for a set schedule in my texts. My boss always said "we'll try" but then would still change it last minute. The last straw was when they texted me at 10pm to come in at 6am the next day instead of my scheduled 2pm shift. I had no one to watch my daughter at that hour.

Based on your last comment, SAVE THAT TEXT showing the 10pm notification for a 6am shift! That's exactly the kind of documentation that helped me win my appeal. Make sure to file your initial claim ASAP - the system will likely deny you automatically, but then you'll have the right to appeal and present your evidence. Start applying for jobs immediately too, as you'll need to show job search efforts regardless of the outcome.

•Just submitted my initial claim online. You're right, I'll plan for the appeal process just in case. I've already started applying for jobs with more regular hours. Hoping to find something soon but UC would really help in the meantime. Thank you all for the advice!
