Can I get unemployment if I quit my job to take care of my mother?
I had to leave my job three months ago because my mom's health declined rapidly and she needs full-time care. I've been her primary caregiver since then but I'm running out of savings. I heard that sometimes you can still qualify for unemployment even if you quit for family reasons. Does anyone know if caring for a sick parent counts as good cause under NYS Department of Labor rules? I'm really stressed about money and don't know what other options I have.

i had a similar situation last year when my dad got sick. it took forever to get approved but they did approve me eventually. make sure you have medical records showing she needed care and that you tried to work with your employer first about taking leave

Just remember you still need to be able and available for work while collecting benefits. If you're still providing full-time care, that could be an issue with your weekly claims.
