Been claiming partial ny unemployment for weeks but not received a penny

I started claiming unemployment again since November 10th after my hours at work got slashed. The department sent me a determination letter saying I'd get $378 weekly. Since I'm still working part-time (about 15 hours a week), I've been reporting my earnings expecting to get partial benefits. It's been 4 weeks of properly filing weekly claims and I haven't received a single payment. No pending transactions in my account, nothing. Could something be wrong with my claim? Should I be calling someone about this? Getting worried since bills are stacking up and I was counting on at least getting something to help make ends meet.

You definitely need to call them. This happens all the time where they approve you then nothing comes thru. Your claim probably has some kind of hold on it that only a rep can fix. Good luck getting through tho, I spent like 6 days trying to reach someone.

Ugh, 6 days? That sounds brutal. Did you eventually get through? I tried calling twice and just gave up after being on hold for 2 hours each time.

0 coins

Yeah it was insane. I'd call right when they opened and still couldn't get through. Finally got lucky on day 6 but still waited 90 minutes on hold.

This is why the system is broken. Nobody can actually talk to a human when there's a problem 🤦‍♀️

After fighting with ny unemployment for weeks with no luck, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual agent. They called and stayed on hold, then called me when they got someone. Talking to an agent got my payments unstuck within a day - best decision ever considering how much back pay I was owed. Check out this video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

wait for real? does this actually work? seems kinda sketchy ngl

0 coins

Yeah, totally worked for me. I was desperate after trying for 3 weeks to get through. They just do the calling and holding for you, then connect you when they get someone. My issue got fixed in one call.

another one of these 'miracle solutions'... what's the catch? 🙄 the unemployment system is literally designed to be impossible

0 coins

No catch that I found. They just save you from the endless hold music. You still talk to the actual unemployment agent yourself. After 2 months of getting nowhere, I got my backpay in a week.

I actually tried this too when I couldn't get through. Saved me days of frustration. Worth checking out if ur desperate like I was.

Are you entering your work hours correctly? If you're making more than a certain amount they might be disqualifying you for those weeks. The partial unemployment formula can be confusing af. Basically if you earn more than 1.5x your benefit rate in a week, you don't get anything for that week.

Same thing happened to me back in September. Turns out there was an ID verification issue they never told me about. My claim just sat there for 6 weeks until I finally got through to someone on the phone. Call them ASAP because if there's an issue, it won't resolve itself and they rarely contact you about problems.

Ugh that's frustrating they don't tell you about these things! How long did it take to fix once you got through to someone?

0 coins

Once I finally talked to someone, it only took about 3 days for the payments to start coming through. They released all my backpay at once. But getting through was the hard part!

Check ur account online - does it say anything about your claim status? Sometimes there's a message that explains whats happening. Also double check that all ur info is correct, especially ur banking info.

0 coins

I checked and it just says my claim is active, no pending issues showing. My banking info is all correct too - I triple checked that part.

This exact thing happened to my sister! She kept claiming with reduced hours and got nothing for weeks. It ended up being that she accidentally clicked something wrong on her first claim that put a hold on everything. Def call them.

MAJOR TIP: The partial unemployment system in NY is a nightmare right now. I had a similar situation and here's what I learned: 1) Make absolutely sure you're calculating your gross earnings (before taxes) not take-home pay when reporting 2) They don't tell you this but if your claim has ANY issues, they just stop payments without notification 3) The online message center is practically useless - you NEED to speak with someone 4) Document EVERYTHING - hours worked, what you reported, confirmation numbers When I couldn't get through on the phone for weeks, I used claimyr.com and got connected to an agent in about 2 hours (instead of days of trying). The agent found that there was a "pending review" on my account that would have never been resolved without intervention. Also check if you're hitting the threshold where benefits get reduced to zero - in NY if you work more than 30 hours OR earn more than your benefit rate, you get nothing that week. The calculation is tricky. Hope this helps and good luck!

Wow, thank you for this detailed breakdown! I'm definitely going to check if I'm hitting that 30 hour threshold - I didn't know about that rule. Really appreciate the thorough explanation.

This is the kind of actual helpful info the DOL should provide but never does 💯

did u get an email confirmation after each weekly claim? if not, they might not be going through properly

0 coins

Yeah I got confirmation numbers for all of them. I've been saving them just in case.

The partial unemployment in NY is so broken right now. They changed all the rules last year and their system can't keep up. I had to call every single week for 2 months to get my partial benefits fixed. It's a nightmare.

0 coins

are u sure ur eligible for partial? i think u need to have lost work through no fault of ur own. if u voluntarily took less hours u might not qualify

0 coins

My hours were cut by my employer - definitely not voluntary. I'd much rather be working full time right now!

0 coins

ok then u should definitely qualify! sounds like theres a system issue. keep claiming each week tho so u dont miss out on any weeks while u try to resolve this

Pro tip: If you call and get through, ask them to process a "back date payment release" for all the weeks you've claimed. Sometimes they batch process these and it takes forever, but an agent can push them through manually.

I swear NY unemployment is designed to make people give up 🤬 They hope if they ignore us long enough we'll just stop claiming

0 coins

No joke! My friend literally gave up after 2 months of trying. System is straight up broken by design.

0 coins

truth. modern unemployment systems are literally programmed to deny as many claims as possible. it's all algorithms designed to save the state money.

0 coins

Beginning to feel that way too... but I really need this money so I can't afford to give up 😞

If you're still working, double check that you're accurately reporting your hours. You need to report even if you worked just 1 hour that week. If you worked more than 30 hours OR made more than your benefit rate in a week, you get $0 for that week.

0 coins

When you filed your claim, did they send you a form to verify your identity? Sometimes they require ID verification before releasing payments and that notice gets lost in the mail.

0 coins

No identity verification that I'm aware of. I got the monetary determination letter about 2 weeks after filing, but nothing else came in the mail.

0 coins

I had this EXACT same problem last month. Turned out there was a flag on my account for "inconsistent work search activities" even though I was reporting everything correctly. The system is so glitchy. Only way I fixed it was by speaking to a tier 2 agent (have to specifically ask to be transferred to one when you call).

0 coins

have u checked ur spam folder for emails from them? sometimes they send important notices that end up in spam

0 coins

Just checked - nothing in spam either. It's like they approved me and then just... forgot about me? So frustrating.

0 coins

Quick question - when u file ur weekly claim, are u saying YES to being ready, willing and able to work full time? If u say no to any of those, they won't pay u.

0 coins

Had almost the exact same issue earlier this year - approved but no payments for weeks. In my case, it turned out there was a "pending employer response" that was holding up everything, even though they never told me about it. The employer had 10 days to respond to my claim and apparently their response triggered some kind of review that froze my payments. Only found out when I finally got through to someone on the phone. Keep calling every day if you can - the system won't fix itself and they rarely proactively contact you about issues. Document everything you're reporting in your weekly claims too, just in case. Hope you get it sorted soon!
