Anyone else getting scary identity theft alert on NY unemployment portal?

So I went to check on my claim status yesterday and noticed a red banner across the top of my ny unemployment account saying my information might have been compromised in a data breach. I never got any email about this, nothing in the mail either. The alert mentioned something about suspicious logins from multiple locations that weren't me. I immediately changed my password and called the fraud hotline but after waiting on hold for over 2 hours nobody picked up. Tried again this morning and same thing. I'm freaking out because I've had all my payments coming through normally for the past 3 months since I got laid off from my restaurant job, but now I'm worried someone might redirect my payments or worse, steal my identity. Has anyone else seen this alert pop up? What did you do about it? I'm concerned because my weekly certification is due tomorrow and I don't know if I should submit it or wait until I talk to someone.

Same exact thing happened to me last week! That red banner scared the crap outta me. I tried calling like 15 times and couldnt get through to anyone. So frustrating 😡 I ended up freezing my credit reports just to be safe. Still havent gotten through to anyone at ny unemployment to figure out whats going on. Let me know if you get any answers!

Did you keep certifying? I'm worried if I certify now with this alert, something bad will happen but I also can't afford to miss a payment.

0 coins

Yeah I kept certifying. I figured stopping payments would just create more problems. Been checking my bank account obsessively tho 👀

yall should check ur credit reports ASAP. This happened to my cousin and someone had already opened 2 credit cards in her name before she caught it!

I finally got through to someone after trying for days! Found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that kept dialing for me and then connected me when an actual human picked up. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast and they confirmed there was a security breach affecting lots of accounts. They removed the alert after verifying my identity. Saved me so much stress! Check out their video too: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

sounds too good to be true honestly... did it actually work? the unemployment office never answers for anyone

0 coins

Yeah it actually did work! I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for 3 days straight. They basically autodial and then call you when they get someone. Took about 45 mins instead of me wasting hours trying to get through.

0 coins

wait hold up - how does this even work? the phone lines are always jammed

0 coins

It uses some kind of autodialer technology thats wayyy more effective than us sitting there redialing manually. claimyr.com seriously saved me from having my benefits interrupted.

0 coins

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

0 coins

The difference is it actually worked lol. They don't handle any of your personal info - they just connect the call to you once they get through to an agent. I was at my wits end before trying it.

This is happening to EVERYONE right now. NY unemployment had a security breach they arent publicly admitting to yet. My brother works in IT for the state (not unemployment dept but he knows people) and he says its a massive problem their dealing with. Change your password, set up 2FA if you can, and watch your accounts. Were all in this boat together 🙄

Any idea when theyll publicly announce it? Seems pretty messed up to leave us all in the dark like this.

No clue. Typical government BS to keep it quiet as long as possible. Probly waiting until they fix it so they dont look bad

omg this explains why I got a credit card application rejection in the mail yesterday for a card I NEVER applied for!!! 😱

Yep this tracks. Friend of mine works at the call center and said they got a memo about 'increased security protocols' but werent told to disclose anything to callers yet.

I went through this exact nightmare scenario about two weeks ago. Here's what I did that finally got it resolved: First, don't panic but take it seriously. This IS a real security issue affecting many NY unemployment accounts right now. 1. Change your password immediately on the portal 2. Contact the credit bureaus and freeze your credit (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion) 3. Keep documenting everything - screenshots of the alert, dates/times you called 4. File an identity theft report with the FTC at identitytheft.gov 5. After failing to get through on the regular lines, I used claimyr.com which got me connected to an actual agent who fixed it The agent confirmed they're dealing with a wave of these issues. They had to verify my identity with additional questions, then removed the hold on my account. My payments resumed the next day. Don't stop certifying weekly - just make sure you've changed your payment info password and your login credentials. Monitor your bank account closely! This is happening to thousands of people right now with NY unemployment. The system is completely overwhelmed but there are ways to get it fixed.

Thank you for this detailed response! Going to follow these steps. Did you have to provide any additional documentation when you finally spoke to someone?

Zara Mirza

•

They asked me additional security questions beyond the usual ones, and had me confirm past employers and exact dates. No physical documents needed in my case, but have your ID and SSN card ready just in case.

What's identitytheft.gov? Is that legit?

Zara Mirza

•

Yes it's the Federal Trade Commission's official site for reporting identity theft. It creates an official report and recovery plan. Super important to have this documentation.

LOL welcome to the club. NY unemployment system is basically swiss cheese for security. I had this happen in February and it took 6 WEEKS to get it sorted. The worst part is nobody tells you anything!

•

6 WEEKS? I can't go that long without benefits! Did they backpay you at least?

0 coins

Luca Russo

•

Yeah they eventually backpaid everything but I had to borrow money from family in the meantime. It suuuucked. The system is totally broken.

Definitely not normal! Call immediately! My cousin ignored a similar alert thinking it was some generic warning and someone drained his account the next day. They changed his direct deposit info. NY unemployment security is a joke rn.

Has anyone had their payments actually stolen? I have the same alert but my payments are still coming through normally so far...

Mine got redirected to another account last week. Took 3 days to notice. Now I'm in bureaucratic hell trying to get it back 😭

Yes! My brother had two payments sent to some random account before he caught it. He used claimyr.com to finally get someone on the phone who could help. The money was eventually returned but it took forever.

This is happening to everyone because NY unemployment hired the cheapest possible contractors to build their system during covid and now we're all paying the price. My account got the same warning. Called the fraud number 37 times with no answer. Finally got through using claimyr.com and an agent told me they're dealing with thousands of these cases right now.

Nobody answering any of the phones at NY unemployment is the real crime here. How we supposed to fix identity theft issues if nobody picks up?!?!?! Been calling for FOUR DAYS STRAIGHT. This is insanity.

0 coins

Try calling right when they open at 8am. Thats how I finally got through. Had to be ready at 7:59 with my finger on the dial button.

Tried that already. Got the 'all agents are busy' message and it hung up on me. 🤬

typical NY unemployment... always finding new ways to make this process even more painful

Anyone have any actual solutions tho? I got the alert last night and now Im freaking out.

Read profile 10's comment above - they gave really good step-by-step instructions

The only real solution is getting through to a human. I tried for days before using claimyr.com - it was the only thing that worked for me.

Not to be that person but... I warned everyone about this months ago when they asked for all that sensitive info during the application process. Their site security is garbage. Too little too late now.

Not helpful dude. We all need unemployment. What were we supposed to do, not apply? 🙄

Fair point. Just frustrated with the whole broken system. Hope everyone gets this figured out.

just checked my account and yep, got the same alert. freaking out cuz i literally just paid rent and now i'm worried the next payment won't come through. anyone know if we're supposed to keep certifying with this alert active?

Keep certifying! If you stop, it could cause even more problems. Just change your password first.

GUYS I think I figured out what happened. There was a data breach mentioned in some obscure press release last month - it wasn't widely reported. I found this article: https://www.databreachtoday.com/state-unemployment-systems-targeted-in-credential-stuffing-attacks-a-19375

0 coins

Holy shit why isn't this bigger news?? They should be required to notify everyone!

Malik Jackson

Thanks for sharing this! I'm shocked this isn't being covered more widely.

StarStrider

•

Typical. They always try to hide these things. Bet they knew for weeks before putting up those alerts.

0 coins

I work in cybersecurity (not for NY state) and I can tell you these alerts are legitimate concerns. What's likely happening is credential stuffing - hackers got passwords from other breached sites and are trying them on government portals. If you use the same password across multiple sites, you're especially vulnerable.

Is there anything we can do besides changing our password?

0 coins

Enable 2FA if available, use a unique complex password, check your credit reports, and monitor your bank accounts daily. And most importantly, actually reach someone at unemployment to verify your account.

NebulaNinja

•

Can they access our SSNs through this?

0 coins

Unfortunately yes - if someone gets into your unemployment account, they likely have access to view your SSN and other personal info already stored there. That's why it's so critical to respond quickly.
