I'm in the same boat... $194 per week doesn't even cover groceries for my family. This is so stressful, what if I calculated something wrong when I applied? Can they reduce it even more if they find an error? I keep checking my account obsessively.
just look at the bureau of labor statistics website they have all this stuff broken down by state and demographics
I actually had to research this for my thesis last year and what I found was really eye-opening. The NYS Department of Labor data shows persistent gaps, but you also need to consider underemployment and labor force participation rates, not just unemployment. Some groups might have lower unemployment but also lower overall participation in the workforce. Also make sure you're comparing apples to apples - age-adjusted rates give you a clearer picture.
I had issues reaching NYS Department of Labor when my employer contested my claim and I needed to check the status. Regular phone lines were always busy. I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Made the whole process way less stressful when I could actually talk to someone about my adjudication.
The whole system is designed to make it hard for workers! Employers know they can slow down the process by contesting legitimate claims. Even if you eventually win, they've made you suffer for weeks without income. It's disgusting how they protect businesses over people who just lost their jobs.
Don't let the system intimidate you! I was terrified when I first filed but it's actually pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it. The unemployment claim process has these main steps: 1) File your initial claim with work history and reason for separation 2) Wait for determination letter 3) File weekly claims every week 4) Complete job search activities 5) Get paid if everything's approved. The NYS Department of Labor has improved their online system a lot since COVID so it's much more user-friendly now.
To add to what others said - your unemployment claim also determines your weekly benefit amount based on your past earnings. The NYS Department of Labor looks at your wages from the last 18 months and calculates roughly half your average weekly wage, up to the maximum benefit amount. Right now in 2025 the max is around $530 per week. You can collect for up to 26 weeks typically, though this can vary based on economic conditions.

The system drives me CRAZY with stuff like this! Why can't they just clearly post holiday schedules somewhere obvious? I spent 30 minutes looking through their site trying to figure out the same thing last year.

File as normal, payment might be delayed. That's it. Simple.
