Confused about federal unemployment tax payment schedule - NYS Department of Labor question

I'm trying to understand how often employers pay federal unemployment taxes and if this affects when my NYS Department of Labor benefits get processed. My claim has been pending for two weeks and I'm wondering if there's some kind of delay because of when these taxes get paid. Does anyone know if the federal unemployment tax payment schedule impacts our state unemployment claims? I've been searching online but can't find clear info about the timing.

Federal unemployment taxes (FUTA) are typically paid quarterly by employers, but this doesn't directly affect your NYS Department of Labor claim processing. Your benefits come from the state unemployment insurance fund, which is separate from federal tax collections. If your claim is pending for two weeks, it's more likely related to adjudication or verification issues with your work history.

That makes sense! I was really confused about how all the different parts work together. Should I be worried about the two week delay then?

yeah employers pay FUTA taxes quarterly but like the other person said it doesnt affect your weekly claims at all. two weeks isnt that long honestly, mine took almost a month to get approved last year

The confusion is understandable because there are multiple tax systems involved. Employers pay both state unemployment insurance taxes (to fund your benefits) and federal unemployment taxes (FUTA) which fund administrative costs and extended benefit programs. The state taxes are what actually pay your weekly benefits, and those are collected continuously throughout the year. Your two-week delay is probably just normal adjudication processing time.

Wait so there are two different unemployment taxes? I had no idea it was that complicated. No wonder the system seems so confusing when you're trying to file a claim.

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to check on your claim status, I had success using a service called Claimyr at claimyr.com. They help you get connected to actual agents instead of sitting on hold forever. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Really helped me get answers about my adjudication delay.

Thanks for the suggestion! I've been trying to call for days with no luck. I'll check out that video.

The whole system is so unnecessarily complicated! Like why do we need federal AND state taxes for unemployment? Just make it simple for crying out loud. No wonder people get confused about what affects what.

totally agree with the confusion! when i first filed i thought all unemployment money came from the federal government lol. had to learn the hard way that each state runs its own program
