I had a really hard time getting through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor to even ask about this stuff. Spent weeks calling and getting disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me actually reach a live agent who could explain all the different benefit programs. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Made the whole process so much easier than trying to navigate the phone system myself.
Just want to add that even though you cant get unemployment for maternity leave, if you lose your job while pregnant (like layoffs or company closure) you CAN still get regular UI benefits as long as you're able to work. I was 6 months pregnant when I got laid off and NYS Department of Labor approved my claim no problem. The key is being able and available for work.
I'm in the same boat... $194 per week doesn't even cover groceries for my family. This is so stressful, what if I calculated something wrong when I applied? Can they reduce it even more if they find an error? I keep checking my account obsessively.
Don't forget about the Reemployment Services and Eligibility Assessment (RESEA) program if you get selected. It's mandatory but they provide personalized job search assistance and can connect you to additional resources. Also, if you're thinking about starting your own business, look into the Self-Employment Assistance Program - you can use your unemployment benefits to support yourself while getting a business off the ground.
just to clarify - you CANNOT collect both workers comp and unemployment at the same time. they're mutually exclusive. if you're on workers comp you're not available for work so you don't qualify for NYS Department of Labor benefits

•Three months?? That sounds awful. Did you end up owing anything in the end?

•nope, nothing. they admitted they miscalculated my benefits. but those 3 months were hell waiting for them to fix it

Same thing here - got the scary letter but it was just their computer system being dumb. As long as you've been honest about your work and reporting everything on your weekly claims you should be fine.
