wait so they can just deny unemployment because a robot took your job?? that seems totally unfair, like what are we supposed to do when everything gets automated
This whole system is broken. I've been dealing with NYS Department of Labor for months over a similar issue and they act like every claim is fraudulent. They make you jump through hoops just to get benefits you've paid into for years. Don't let them intimidate you - keep fighting and document everything!
Don't forget to mention Extended Benefits during recessions - that's when the federal-state cooperation really shows. During high unemployment periods, the federal government can trigger extended benefits that NYS Department of Labor then administers using federal funds. It's a great example of how the system adapts to economic conditions through federal-state coordination.
honestly this sounds like a complicated way to run things lol why not just have one federal system instead of 50 different state programs
For NYS Department of Labor benefits, you basically need to be unemployed through no fault of your own and able and available for work. The economic textbook stuff about frictional vs structural unemployment doesn't really matter when you're filing your weekly claim. What matters is whether you meet the eligibility requirements and are actively job searching.
This is so confusing! I've been trying to reach NYS Department of Labor for weeks about my claim status and can't get through their phone lines. The terminology on their website doesn't match what my textbook says either.
I had the same problem reaching them until I found claimyr.com - they help you get through to actual NYS Department of Labor agents. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call.
For your exam, remember that economic theory usually covers frictional (job searching), structural (skills mismatch), cyclical (economic downturns), and seasonal unemployment. But NYS Department of Labor doesn't use these exact terms when determining benefit eligibility. They care more about the reason you became unemployed and whether you're actively seeking work.
From a personal finance perspective, unemployment is definitely systematic risk for your household budget regardless of what the textbooks say. When you lose your job, it affects everything - your ability to pay bills, your credit score if you miss payments, your retirement savings if you have to withdraw early. The fact that NYS Department of Labor benefits only replace a fraction of your income makes it even more systematic to your personal financial system.

•Yes, you're thinking of the NYS Department of Labor Jobs Portal. Registration there is required as part of your work search activities, and it counts as one of your three weekly job search requirements.

The whole process is honestly a nightmare. I've been dealing with NYS Department of Labor for months and they make everything so complicated. But basically: file initial claim online, wait for monetary determination letter, start filing weekly claims, do your job searches, and pray nothing goes wrong because good luck reaching anyone if it does. The system is broken but you have to work within it.
