The whole system is backwards if you ask me. You can get fired for poor performance and get benefits immediately, but if you quit because your boss is making your life hell, suddenly you're the problem. Makes no sense.
To be clear - 'voluntary unemployment' means you initiated the separation from employment. But having good cause changes everything. File your claim, select that you quit, and when they ask why, be very detailed about the hostile work environment. Gather any evidence you have - emails, texts, witness statements, HR complaints you may have filed. The adjudication process will review all of this.
If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor about your 1099-G or have questions about the amounts, I had success using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to actually reach someone. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. I was able to get clarification on some discrepancies in my tax documents that way since calling directly was impossible.
wait so if i got unemployment do i need to file taxes even if i didnt work? i thought you only filed if you made over a certain amount
I had trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to ask about this same question actually. The phone lines are always busy when you try to call them directly. I ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Might be helpful if you have other questions about your benefits that need a real person to answer.
The whole unemployment system is just another way for the government to control businesses if you ask me. Making employers pay all these taxes and then bureaucrats decide who gets benefits and who doesn't. At least you're getting something back but the red tape is ridiculous.
Had a similar situation last year when my freelance graphic design work disappeared. Took me forever to get through to someone at NYS Department of Labor to ask questions. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an agent who could explain my options. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Turns out I did qualify based on some contract work that had been treated as W-2.
Never heard of that service before but might be worth trying since calling NYS Department of Labor directly is impossible these days. How much does it cost?

I had such a hard time getting through to NYS Department of Labor to ask about this exact question last year. Spent hours on hold trying to reach someone who could explain what counts as remuneration. Finally found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to actual agents - they have a website at claimyr.com and there's even a demo video showing how it works (https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI). Made it so much easier to get my questions answered about reporting requirements.

•Never heard of that service but honestly anything that helps with getting through to NYS Department of Labor sounds helpful. Those phone lines are impossible.

The remuneration question trips up SO many people! I work in HR and see this confusion all the time. Just remember - if you did any work or received any payment related to work during the week you're certifying for, report it. NYS Department of Labor would rather you report something that doesn't count than miss something that does. Better safe than sorry when it comes to unemployment fraud accusations.
