NYS Department of Labor unemployment - who applies for unemployment and what qualifies you?

I'm really confused about who can actually apply for unemployment benefits through NYS Department of Labor. My cousin says anyone who gets fired can get it, but my coworker says you have to work a certain amount of time first. I lost my retail job last week after working there for 8 months and I'm not sure if I even qualify. Do you have to be laid off specifically or can people who get terminated for attendance issues still apply? Also wondering about part-time workers - my friend only worked 20 hours a week but still got unemployment somehow. Can someone explain the basic rules for who applies for unemployment in NY?

basically anyone can APPLY but whether you get approved is different. I applied when I quit my job and obviously got denied but at least I tried lol. the system is set up to make you jump through hoops anyway

Why would I not be eligible for unemployment benefits from NYS Department of Labor?

I got laid off from my restaurant job two weeks ago after working there for 8 months. When I tried to file for unemployment online, the system is telling me I might not be eligible but it's not clear why. I worked full-time, paid taxes, and got laid off through no fault of my own. The whole eligibility system is a JOKE. They make it so complicated on purpose to discourage people from applying. I worked for 2 years and they still tried to deny me because of some technicality about my work schedule. Had to fight them for months just to get what I was entitled to.

def check if you were classified as an employee vs independent contractor too. some restaurants try to pull that and if you were 1099 instead of W2 that could affect eligibility

Also remember you need to register with the NYS job search system and do at least 3 work search activities per week once your claim is approved. A lot of people don't realize this requirement until they get their first weekly claim form.

How to transfer unemployment to bank account - NYS Department of Labor direct deposit setup

I've been getting my unemployment benefits on the KeyBank debit card for the past month but I really need to switch to direct deposit to my regular checking account. The ATM fees are killing me and I can't find KeyBank locations near me. Does anyone know how to set up direct deposit through the NYS Department of Labor system? I looked on my.ny.gov but can't figure out where to change the payment method. Is there a form I need to fill out or do I have to call them?

Just to add - make sure your bank account is in your name only. Joint accounts sometimes cause issues with the NYS Department of Labor direct deposit system. Also double-check that your bank accepts ACH transfers for unemployment benefits, some credit unions have weird rules about it.
