Don't forget you also need to meet the work search requirements once you start collecting. You have to apply for jobs and keep a log of your job search activities. NYS Department of Labor can audit this stuff so keep good records!
Had this exact problem last year! Turns out there was an issue with my job search documentation that was holding up the waiting week payment even though my regular benefits were coming through fine. You might want to call NYS Department of Labor to check if there are any unresolved issues on your claim. I know getting through is tough but I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works.
Just want to add that you'll also need to do job search activities to keep getting benefits. Right now it's 3 job search activities per week and you have to keep a log. Examples include applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, or working with a career counselor. Don't skip this part because they do audit people randomly!
NYS Department of Labor is such a nightmare to deal with. They'll probably take forever to decide and then ask for a million documents. But yeah you should still file even if they fire you for attendance.
Wait, so if I get fired I can still get unemployment? I thought only people who got laid off could get benefits.

Been there! When I first filed I was totally lost too. Basically unemployment gives you weekly payments while you look for a new job, but there are rules. You have to be able to work, available for work, and actively seeking work. If you turn down a suitable job offer they can disqualify you. The payments usually last up to 26 weeks unless there are extensions.
