Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. filing is just the first step, then the real fun begins with all the bureaucratic nonsense. They'll probably put your claim in adjudication for weeks while they 'investigate' something trivial. The whole system is designed to discourage people from actually getting benefits.
That's not always true - my claim was approved within a week with no issues. It really depends on your specific situation and employment history.

Unemployment is insurance that you and your employer paid into while you were working. It's specifically for people who lost their job through no fault of their own. Food stamps and welfare are different programs with different eligibility requirements.

ugh the whole system is so confusing. why can't they just make it simple to reopen a claim instead of making you start over from scratch every time
I know it seems annoying but it actually makes sense from a benefits perspective. Starting fresh means they recalculate your weekly amount based on recent earnings instead of old wages from 2023.

EMPLOYERS DO THIS ALL THE TIME!! They know most people won't fight it and will just give up. My company tried to say I was fired for attendance when I was actually laid off due to covid downsizing. I had to get a lawyer involved but eventually won my case. Don't let them get away with lying!
Did you have to pay the lawyer upfront or did they work on contingency? I can't afford legal fees right now.

I get the frustration but honestly it was worth it for me. The regular NYS Department of Labor phone lines were impossible to get through and I was stressed about my adjudication taking so long.
The whole system is a mess regardless of which county you're in. High unemployment areas probably mean more people fighting for the same crappy jobs AND more people filing claims. It's lose-lose everywhere in this state!!
I feel you on the frustration but some areas really are doing better than others economically. NYC and Albany regions usually have more job opportunities even if the cost of living is higher.

The whole system is rigged against working people. Employers get away with paying under the table because they know workers won't report them, and then when you need help you're left with nothing. Meanwhile they probably pocketed all the money they should have been paying in unemployment taxes.
