Before you quit make sure you have EVERYTHING documented. Screenshots of your schedule showing the hour cuts, printed emails of your HR complaints, maybe even record the inappropriate comments if you can do it legally. NYS Department of Labor will want proof that you didn't just quit because you felt like it. Also file your claim immediately after quitting - don't wait or you might lose benefits for those weeks.
ugh the system is so messed up... why should you have to PROVE you deserve help when you're already in a bad situation?? like if someone quits theres probably a good reason
I had such a hard time getting through to NYS Department of Labor to ask about my benefit calculation when I first applied. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent who explained everything. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Made the whole process so much easier than trying to call myself.
Just remember you have to report ANY work you do while collecting unemployment, even if it's just a few hours. They'll reduce your benefit for that week but you might still get something. And you have to do the job search requirements too - 3 work search activities per week unless you're on standby with your employer.
just so you know the NYS Department of Labor system is pretty backed up right now so expect delays in processing. took them 3 weeks to approve my partial claim last month even though everything was correct
Make sure your employer doesn't try to claim this is seasonal work if it's not actually seasonal! Some companies try to avoid partial unemployment claims by misclassifying the work reduction. Document everything about what they told you regarding the business slowdown.

Wait so they can just deny you even if you were laid off?? I thought unemployment was guaranteed if you lost your job. This is making me nervous about my own situation - I was let go last month and still waiting to hear back on my claim.

•No, unemployment benefits aren't guaranteed. You have to meet eligibility requirements and employers can contest claims. But if you were legitimately laid off through no fault of your own, you should be approved.

File that appeal ASAP! The 30-day deadline is firm and if you miss it you're basically out of luck. I learned this the hard way when I procrastinated on mine.
