NYS Department of Labor claim delayed - worldwide event began 1939 that could have contributed to decreasing unemployment?
This might sound weird but I'm doing research for my history class while waiting for my unemployment claim to process and I keep thinking about how different things were back then. My professor asked what worldwide event began 1939 that could have contributed to decreasing unemployment and I'm supposed to write about economic impacts. Meanwhile my own claim has been stuck in adjudication for 2 weeks with no updates from NYS Department of Labor. The irony isn't lost on me that I'm researching historical unemployment while dealing with my own unemployment issues. Has anyone else had their claim take this long to process? I filed my weekly claims but the payment status still shows pending.

World War II started in 1939 when Germany invaded Poland - that's what your professor is asking about. The war economy massively reduced unemployment as factories ramped up production for the war effort. But regarding your NYS Department of Labor issue, 2 weeks in adjudication is pretty normal right now. Have you checked if there are any outstanding issues in your online account that need documentation?

•Thanks for the history help! And no, my NY.gov account doesn't show any issues that need my attention. Just says 'claim under review' with no timeline given.

yeah ww2 started sept 1939 and created tons of jobs in defense industries. for your unemployment thing though - mine took 3 weeks in adjudication last month. just had to wait it out

The historical parallel is actually interesting - WWII did eliminate unemployment through massive government spending on defense production. For your current situation, if you're having trouble getting updates from NYS Department of Labor, you might want to try Claimyr at claimyr.com. They helped me get through to an actual agent when I was stuck in adjudication limbo. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Much easier than trying to call the regular number and getting hung up on.

•Yeah, I was able to speak with someone who could see my case and explain why it was delayed. Turned out they needed additional verification that wasn't showing up in my online account.

lol studying unemployment while being unemployed is pretty meta. but seriously the adjudication process is taking forever lately. i think they're backed up from all the people who lost jobs in the tech layoffs this year

The war definitely solved the Depression-era unemployment crisis through government spending and industrial mobilization. Similar to how government programs today could theoretically address unemployment, though obviously we prefer peaceful solutions! Your claim delay is frustrating but unfortunately typical. NYS Department of Labor is notorious for these processing delays, especially when they need to verify employment history or investigate potential issues.
