Why is low unemployment bad for NYS Department of Labor claim processing?
I've been hearing economists say that low unemployment rates can actually be problematic, but I'm confused about how this affects us who are currently filing unemployment claims with NYS Department of Labor. My claim has been in adjudication for 2 weeks now and I'm wondering if the current job market situation is somehow making it harder to get benefits approved? Does anyone understand the connection between unemployment rates and how NYS Department of Labor processes our claims?

Low unemployment generally means fewer people filing claims, so NYS Department of Labor should theoretically have more resources to process individual cases faster. However, when unemployment is low, they also tend to scrutinize claims more carefully since there are supposedly more jobs available. This can lead to longer adjudication periods as they verify your job search efforts and whether you're truly unable to find work.

•That makes sense about the scrutiny part. I've been doing my weekly claims and job searches but maybe they're being extra careful because of the job market?

•It's complicated. Low unemployment can cause wage inflation and labor shortages in certain sectors. For unemployment claims, it means NYS Department of Labor expects you to find work faster, so they might approve shorter benefit periods or require more intensive job search documentation.

I had a similar issue with my claim taking forever when unemployment was at record lows last year. Ended up having to call NYS Department of Labor dozens of times. Actually found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of being on hold and getting disconnected.

•Interesting, never heard of that. Did they actually help resolve your adjudication issue or just get you connected?

•They got me connected to an agent who could actually see what was holding up my claim. Turned out there was a verification issue that wasn't showing up in my online account.

Low unemployment is bad because it gives employers too much power and they start cutting benefits and treating workers worse because they know people need jobs. Plus NYS Department of Labor gets stingy with approvals because they assume everyone should be able to find work easily.

•This exactly! When I got laid off during a low unemployment period, they questioned everything about my job search. Made me prove I wasn't being too picky about wages and location.
