What is unemployment rate at in NY right now - does it affect my claim approval?
I'm trying to understand what unemployment is at currently in New York and if the unemployment rate affects whether my claim gets approved or not. I filed my claim with NYS Department of Labor two weeks ago and it's still pending. My friend said when unemployment rates are high they're stricter about approvals but I don't know if that's true. Does anyone know what the current unemployment rate is and if it actually impacts individual claim decisions? I'm getting anxious because I haven't heard anything back yet.

The unemployment rate doesn't directly affect whether your individual claim gets approved. NYS Department of Labor determines eligibility based on your work history, reason for separation, and whether you meet the monetary requirements. The unemployment rate is more about overall economic conditions, not individual claim processing. Your claim is probably just going through normal adjudication if there are any issues that need review.

•That's a relief to hear! I was worried they were being extra picky because of the economy. Do you know how long adjudication usually takes?

I think the current unemployment rate in NY is around 4-5% but I'm not 100% sure. You can check the Bureau of Labor Statistics website for exact numbers. But like the other person said, it shouldn't affect your claim approval. Two weeks isn't that long for processing - I waited almost a month for mine to get approved last year.

•I tried calling but couldn't get through. The phone lines are always busy or I get disconnected.

•I had the same problem with getting through to NYS Department of Labor by phone. I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have this system that handles the calling for you and there's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Got my adjudication issue resolved within a day of talking to someone.

The unemployment rate is just a statistic about how many people are unemployed vs employed. It has nothing to do with your specific claim approval. Your claim gets approved based on whether you worked enough quarters, earned enough wages, and had a qualifying separation reason. The rate could be 2% or 10% and it wouldn't change the eligibility rules.

I think your friend is confusing things. Maybe they're thinking about how during recessions sometimes there are temporary program changes or funding issues, but for regular UI claims the unemployment rate doesn't matter. NYS Department of Labor follows the same eligibility rules regardless of the economic climate.
