What is the rate (%) of unemployment in NY right now and how does it affect my benefits?

I've been wondering about this since I filed my claim last month. What is the rate (%) of unemployment currently in New York? Does this affect how much I can get in benefits or how long they last? I heard that when unemployment rates are higher, you might be eligible for extended benefits but I'm not sure if that's true. My weekly benefit amount seems low compared to what I was making and I'm trying to understand if the current unemployment rate has anything to do with it. Also does NYS Department of Labor use these statistics when they're processing claims?

The current unemployment rate in New York is around 4.2% as of the latest data from December 2024. However, this doesn't directly affect your weekly benefit amount - that's calculated based on your earnings history from your base period. Your weekly benefit rate is determined by taking your highest quarter earnings and dividing by 26, up to the maximum of $504 per week. Extended benefits only trigger when unemployment rates hit much higher thresholds, usually above 6.5% for 13 weeks.

Thanks for explaining! So the 4.2% rate won't help me get extended benefits then. I was hoping there might be some extra help available.

You can find the official unemployment statistics on the NYS Department of Labor website under their labor statistics section. They update it monthly with both statewide and regional breakdowns.

I've been dealing with NYS Department of Labor for months trying to get through to someone about my claim status and the unemployment rate question reminded me - if you're having trouble reaching them by phone, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

Never heard of that before but honestly might be worth trying. I've been calling for 2 weeks straight and can never get through to ask about my adjudication status.

THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DOESN'T MATTER WHEN THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN! They'll find any excuse to delay or deny your claim regardless of what the statistics say. I've been waiting 6 weeks for adjudication and they keep giving me the runaround.

I understand the frustration, but the adjudication process is separate from unemployment rate calculations. If you've been waiting 6 weeks, you should definitely try to contact them directly or file an inquiry through your online account.

Just to add some context to the discussion - New York's unemployment rate has actually been trending downward over the past year. While 4.2% is relatively low compared to national averages, it's worth noting that different regions within NY can vary significantly. NYC metro area often has different rates than upstate regions. The NYS DOL does use these statistics for policy decisions and federal funding, but as others mentioned, your individual benefit calculation is based on your personal work history, not the overall rate. If you're concerned about your benefit amount being too low, double-check that all your employers from your base period were reported correctly in your claim.

That's really helpful info about the regional differences! I didn't realize NYC metro could have different rates than upstate. I'm actually in the Albany area - do you know if there's a way to find unemployment rates broken down by specific regions like that? Also good point about checking that all my employers were reported correctly. I had 3 different jobs during my base period so I want to make sure they're all showing up.
