wait I'm confused, can they take money from regular unemployment or just certain types? I'm on regular UI through NYS Department of Labor not any special program
This reminds me when my unemployment got messed up because of some mix-up with my taxes. NYS Department of Labor held up my benefits for like 3 weeks while they sorted it out with the IRS. Turned out to be some clerical error but it was a nightmare trying to get anyone on the phone to fix it. Finally got through and they straightened it out but those 3 weeks without money were brutal.
just so you know the NYS Department of Labor system is pretty backed up right now so expect delays in processing. took them 3 weeks to approve my partial claim last month even though everything was correct
Make sure your employer doesn't try to claim this is seasonal work if it's not actually seasonal! Some companies try to avoid partial unemployment claims by misclassifying the work reduction. Document everything about what they told you regarding the business slowdown.
I had such a hard time getting through to NYS Department of Labor when I had questions about my application. The phone lines are always busy and I kept getting disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Made the whole process so much easier when I could actually talk to someone about my specific situation.
THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS SO SLOW! I waited almost a month and had to call like 50 times before anyone would tell me what was happening with my claim. They act like they're doing you a favor when it's YOUR money you paid into the system!

I had such a hard time getting through to NYS Department of Labor to ask about my benefit calculation when I first applied. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent who explained everything. •Never heard of that before but might be worth trying. The phone system is absolutely terrible when you need real answers about your claim.

Just remember you have to report ANY work you do while collecting unemployment, even if it's just a few hours. They'll reduce your benefit for that week but you might still get something. And you have to do the job search requirements too - 3 work search activities per week unless you're on standby with your employer.

•Good point about the job search stuff. I wasn't sure if I had to start that right away or wait until my claim was approved.

•You should start doing your work search activities as soon as you file your first weekly claim. Keep a log of everything because they can audit you anytime.
