Keep in mind that even after your claim is approved, there's usually a one-week waiting period before you start receiving payments. So if your claim gets approved at the 3-week mark, you'd still be waiting another week for your first payment. The waiting period is unpaid but serves as your first week of unemployment.
honestly the unemployment system is so messed up, they approve almost everyone these days regardless of why they got fired. i've seen people get benefits after stealing from their employer! the burden of proof is ridiculous for small business owners
Wait I'm confused about this whole thing. If someone gets fired can they always get unemployment? What if they were a terrible employee?
wait so if my employer pays unemployment taxes does that mean they can see how much money im getting each week?? this is making me paranoid
The pay type progress field tracks your claim through different payment phases in the NYS Department of Labor system. It typically shows stages like 'Initial Review', 'Payment Authorization', 'Active Payments', etc. This helps both you and NYS Department of Labor staff understand exactly where your claim stands in the payment pipeline. It's mostly for administrative tracking purposes.
If you're having trouble getting clear answers from the NYS Department of Labor website or phone system, I had good luck using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to actually reach a live agent who could explain all these confusing status fields. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Sometimes talking to an actual person makes these system details much clearer than trying to decode them yourself.
Interesting, I've never heard of that service before. Have you used it yourself for NYS Department of Labor questions?

•You can work part-time and still collect benefits! You just need to report your earnings on your weekly claim. They'll reduce your benefit amount based on how much you earned, but you won't lose everything unless you earn over a certain threshold.

Been on UI for 6 months now and haven't had any issues. Just follow the rules exactly as they're written and you'll be fine. The people who lose benefits usually made some obvious mistake or weren't actually eligible in the first place.
