What does progress mean on unemployment claim status - NYS Department of Labor

I'm really confused about my unemployment claim status on the NYS Department of Labor website. It just says 'progress' under my claim status and I have no idea what that means. I filed my claim two weeks ago and completed my weekly certifications but the status hasn't changed. Does anyone know what 'progress' actually means? Am I approved or still waiting? I'm starting to stress because I need to know if benefits are coming or if there's something wrong with my claim.

Progress usually means your claim is being processed but hasn't been fully adjudicated yet. It's not approved or denied - it's somewhere in between. The NYS Department of Labor is reviewing your information, verifying your employment history, and making sure everything checks out before they make a decision.

Thank you! How long does this usually take? I'm getting really worried about my bills.

mine said progress for like 3 weeks before it switched to approved, just keep doing your weekly claims while you wait

The progress status typically means your claim is in the queue for review but no red flags have been raised that would require special adjudication. Keep filing your weekly claims even while it shows progress - this is important because you need to maintain your claim to receive retroactive payments once it's approved. If there were issues with your claim, you'd see a different status like 'pending adjudication' or specific issues listed in your account.

Wait, so should I be worried if mine says 'pending adjudication' instead of progress? I've been in that status for over a month and can't get through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor to find out what's going on.

If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor by phone, I had success using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on. Might be worth checking out if you need to talk to someone about your adjudication status.

Progress is better than nothing I guess but the NYS Department of Labor system is so confusing. Why can't they just say 'under review' or something normal people can understand? And why does it take weeks just to verify basic information? Other states process claims way faster.

I know right? The whole system feels like it's from the 1990s.

I've been through this same situation! "Progress" status drove me crazy for about 2-3 weeks, but it eventually switched to approved. The key thing is to keep filing your weekly certifications no matter what - I almost stopped doing them thinking it didn't matter, but my caseworker later told me that would have delayed my payments even more. The NYS system is definitely slow, but progress is actually a good sign that there are no major issues with your application. Hang in there!
