I've been trying to get through to NYS Department of Labor for weeks about my own claim issues and it's impossible. If you need to actually talk to someone about this wages in lieu situation, I recently found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to unemployment agents. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI. Saved me hours of calling and getting disconnected.
The whole wages in lieu thing is so confusing! I got severance when I was laid off and wasn't sure if that was the same thing. Turns out severance is different - you can collect unemployment right away with severance but not with wages in lieu of notice. The NYS Department of Labor website should really explain this stuff better.
Also make sure you have accurate gross wages for each employer, not just net pay. NYS Department of Labor calculates your benefit amount based on gross wages, and if you report the wrong amounts it can delay your claim or create overpayment issues later. Keep all your documentation in case they need to verify anything during adjudication.
I had similar issues and couldn't get through to NYS Department of Labor phone support because of the crazy call volume. Someone here mentioned claimyr.com - it's a service that helps you actually reach unemployment agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.
The whole system is a mess honestly. I've been unemployed for 2 months and still dealing with adjudication issues. Even when the system is 'open' half the time it doesn't work properly.
just remember you have to file within like a week of losing your job or you might miss out on benefits for those weeks

This whole minimum wage thing is such a mess. Companies just cut hours and workers end up worse off than before. At least unemployment benefits exist but it shouldn't have to come to that. NYS Department of Labor should do something about employers who use wage increases as an excuse to slash jobs.

Just make sure you keep documentation of your normal work schedule and any notices they give you about hour reductions. NYS Department of Labor will want to verify that the reduction wasn't voluntary. Also, you'll need to be available for work and continue job searching if you're on partial benefits, so keep that job search log updated even if you're still working reduced hours.

•Good point about the documentation. Should I ask my manager for something in writing about the hour cuts?

•Definitely get it in writing if possible. Even an email or text message explaining the reason for reduced hours can help support your claim.
