Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. When can you not collect unemployment - NYS Department of Labor disqualification reasons?

I'm trying to understand all the situations where NYS Department of Labor will deny or disqualify you from unemployment benefits. My friend got denied and I want to make sure I don't make the same mistakes when I file next month. I know you can't get benefits if you quit without good cause, but what are all the other reasons? Like what about if you get fired for attendance issues or if you refuse a job offer? I've heard there are also work search requirements that can disqualify you. Can someone break down all the ways you can be ineligible for UI benefits in New York?

one more thing - if you worked in multiple states you might have issues with which state to file in. has to be the state where you worked most recently or earned the most wages. filing in the wrong state can mess everything up

What does unemployment cost the employer when filing NYS Department of Labor claim?

My boss is making it seem like me filing for unemployment is going to bankrupt the company or something. He keeps saying how much it's going to 'cost him' when I submit my NYS Department of Labor claim. Is this actually true? I got laid off due to budget cuts but now he's acting like I'm personally attacking him by filing. Can someone explain what the actual costs are to employers when someone files for unemployment benefits? I don't want to feel guilty about something I'm entitled to.

just file your claim already. employers pay unemployment insurance for a reason. if they didnt want to deal with claims they shouldnt hire people. its not your problem what it costs them

I think the psychological impact on employers is often worse than the financial impact. They see it as a mark against their business even though layoffs happen for legitimate reasons. The actual dollar cost to them is usually pretty minimal compared to other business expenses.

NYS Department of Labor substitute teacher pay affecting my unemployment benefits - what is sub pay policy?

I've been collecting unemployment since last September when my full-time teaching position was eliminated due to budget cuts. I recently started doing some substitute teaching work and I'm really confused about how this affects my benefits. The district pays me through their regular payroll system but it's only when I actually work. Some weeks I get called in 2-3 days, other weeks nothing. My question is what is sub pay considered for unemployment purposes? Do I report each day I work separately or wait until I get the actual paycheck? The amounts vary wildly - sometimes $180 for a full day, sometimes just $90 for a half day. I've been reporting it when I work but my weekly benefit amount keeps changing and I'm worried I'm doing something wrong. Has anyone else dealt with substitute pay while on unemployment?

Wait I'm confused - are you reporting the gross amount you earn or after taxes? And what if you work a half day but get paid for planning time too?

Report the gross amount before any deductions. If you're paid for planning time, that counts as part of your total earnings for that day. The key is reporting all compensation received for work performed during each weekly claim period.

This might sound weird but I'm doing research for my history class while waiting for my unemployment claim to process and I keep thinking about how different things were back then. My professor asked what worldwide event began 1939 that could have contributed to decreasing unemployment and I'm supposed to write about economic impacts. Meanwhile my own claim has been stuck in adjudication for 2 weeks with no updates from NYS Department of Labor. The irony isn't lost on me that I'm researching historical unemployment while dealing with my own unemployment issues. Has anyone else had their claim take this long to process? I filed my weekly claims but the payment status still shows pending.

The war definitely solved the Depression-era unemployment crisis through government spending and industrial mobilization. Similar to how government programs today could theoretically address unemployment, though obviously we prefer peaceful solutions! Your claim delay is frustrating but unfortunately typical. Fired for poor performance - can I still get NYS Department of Labor unemployment benefits?

Just got terminated yesterday from my job at a marketing firm after 8 months. My supervisor said it was due to poor performance and not meeting quarterly targets. Just want to add that you should file ASAP even if you're not sure you qualify. There's a waiting period anyway, and if you wait too long you might miss out on benefits you're entitled to. Better to apply and get denied than not apply at all.
