How to find employer account number for unemployment claim - NYS Department of Labor
I'm filling out my unemployment application and it's asking for my employer's account number. I have no idea what this is or where to find it. My last job was at a retail store and I don't have access to any HR systems anymore. Do I really need this to file my claim with NYS Department of Labor? Where would this number even be located?

You don't actually need the employer account number to file your initial unemployment claim. NYS Department of Labor can look up your employer using the company name and address. Just fill in what you know - business name, address, your dates of employment, and your supervisor's name if you remember it. The system will match it up.

•Oh thank god, I was worried I couldn't file without it! Should I just leave that field blank then?

The employer account number is on your paystubs if you still have any. It's usually a series of numbers, sometimes with letters mixed in. But like the other person said, you don't need it to file. NYS Department of Labor has all employer information in their system already.

If you really want to find it, you could try calling your old workplace and asking HR for it. But honestly it's not worth the hassle since NYS Department of Labor doesn't require it. I've been through this process twice and never needed that specific number.

•This is so helpful! I was stressing about the same thing when I filed last month.

The whole unemployment system is so confusing with all these random fields they ask for. Half the time NYS Department of Labor already has the information anyway but they still make you jump through hoops. Just fill out what you can and submit it - they'll contact you if they need anything else.

I had the exact same issue when I filed a few months ago! I spent way too much time searching through old documents looking for this number. Turns out you can just skip it entirely. NYS Department of Labor will match your employer based on the business name and your Social Security number from their records. Don't stress about it - just make sure you have the correct business name and address and you'll be fine.
