The NYS Department of Labor system is honestly such a nightmare to deal with. I've been trying to get through to someone for weeks about an issue with my claim and their phone lines are always busy. The website crashes constantly and half the time you can't even file your weekly claim. It's like they don't want people to actually get benefits. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to a human being there?
I had the same problem with getting through to NYS Department of Labor on the phone. Someone told me about this service called Claimyr that helps you get connected to unemployment agents. I was skeptical at first but checked out their website at claimyr.com and watched their demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI. It actually worked - I got through to someone the same day and resolved my adjudication issue. Might be worth trying if you're stuck.
The current maximum weekly benefit rate in NY is $504 for 2025, but most people don't qualify for the max. NYS Department of Labor uses a sliding scale based on your base period wages. You can check your monetary determination letter on my.ny.gov for the exact breakdown of how they calculated your amount.
Wait I'm 20 and my friend told me there were special programs for young unemployed people through NYS Department of Labor? Like job training stuff? Or is that something different?
That's probably referring to workforce development programs like WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act) which can provide training opportunities for younger workers. Those are separate from regular unemployment benefits though - you can be on UI and still participate in training programs.
Just a heads up - if you have trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor on the phone for any questions, I recently used this service called Claimyr that helped me connect with an actual agent. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call and getting busy signals.

honestly the whole system is screwed. they keep saying there are jobs available but half of them are probably going to be automated in the next few years anyway. what's the point of job searching if everything's going to robots?

•I understand the frustration, but focusing on adaptable skills is key. Healthcare, education, skilled maintenance - these sectors are actually expanding and need human workers. The job market is changing, not disappearing.

My brother went through this exact thing last year at his manufacturing job. He ended up using his unemployment time to get certified as an HVAC technician and now makes more money than before. The key is not panicking and using the time wisely.
