Also keep in mind that if you worked in multiple states, things get more complicated. NYS Department of Labor will coordinate with other states through interstate claims, but it can delay processing. And if you're on standby status (temporary layoff expecting to return), the rules are slightly different - you don't have to do job searches but you do have to remain available.
The whole system is so confusing! I wish they would just tell you upfront if you qualify instead of making you jump through hoops. At least once you're approved the weekly claims are pretty straightforward.
Also remember you need to register with the NYS job search system and do at least 3 work search activities per week once your claim is approved. A lot of people don't realize this requirement until they get their first weekly claim form.
The whole eligibility system is a JOKE. They make it so complicated on purpose to discourage people from applying. I worked for 2 years and they still tried to deny me because of some technicality about my work schedule. Had to fight them for months just to get what I was entitled to.
Make sure you're not working ANY hours during weeks you claim benefits, even if it's just a few hours of freelance work. That's what caused my adjudication nightmare last year. NYS Department of Labor flagged every week where I had even minimal earnings and it took forever to sort out.

The system is so broken anyway. Even if they extend benefits the NYS Department of Labor website will probably crash and half of us won't be able to file our weekly claims. I've had nothing but problems with adjudication delays and getting locked out of my account.

Best advice is to stay informed through official channels - check the NYS Department of Labor website regularly and sign up for their email updates if available. Also make sure you're meeting all current requirements so you don't lose eligibility if something does get extended.
