DETR Name Change Process - Tips and Recent Experiences?
Hey everyone, I'm in the process of changing my name and need to update it with DETR. I've got all the necessary documents like my marriage certificate ready. Has anyone gone through this process recently? Any tips or things I should be aware of when talking to them?

Congrats on the name change! I went through this last year. Make sure you have multiple copies of your documents - they sometimes ask for extras. Also, be prepared for a long wait time on the phone. It took me hours to get through.

•Ugh, that sounds rough. Did you have any issues once you actually got through to someone?

•Nah, once I got through it was pretty smooth sailing. The agent knew exactly what to do. Just be patient and have all your docs ready!

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/joPqgg0bRFw

•I get the skepticism, but it seriously saved me days of frustration. Worth every penny imo

•How long did it take for them to call you back?

•It took about an hour and a half, but I just went about my day and got the call when an agent was available. Way better than being stuck on hold!

Make sure you also update your name with Social Security first! DETR needs to match their records.

Pro tip: if you can, try calling right when they open. I've had better luck getting through early in the morning.

Here's a comprehensive guide for updating your name with DETR: 1. Ensure you've updated your name with Social Security first 2. Gather all necessary documents: - Marriage certificate or court order - Updated driver's license or state ID - Updated Social Security card 3. Make copies of everything - they might ask for extras 4. Call DETR early in the morning for shorter wait times 5. Be patient and polite with the agent 6. Ask for a confirmation number or email after the change is made 7. Follow up in a week if you don't see the change reflected in your account Remember, the process can take time. If you run into issues, don't hesitate to ask for a supervisor. Good luck!

Hey OP, congrats on the name change! Just a heads up, make sure you update your bank info too if you're getting direct deposits. Learned that one the hard way 😅

Thanks for sharing your experience, Emma! I went through this process about 6 months ago and it was definitely a journey. One thing I'd add to all the great advice here is to make sure you have your claim number ready when you call - they'll need it to pull up your account quickly. Also, if you're currently receiving benefits, ask specifically about whether there will be any interruption during the name change process. In my case, there was a brief delay in payments while they updated everything, so it's good to plan for that possibility. The whole process took about 2-3 weeks for me from start to finish. Best of luck with everything!

Just wanted to add my recent experience from last month! I also went through the name change process with DETR and it went surprisingly smoothly. One thing that really helped me was organizing all my documents in a specific order before calling - I had my claim number, old ID, new ID, marriage certificate, and updated Social Security card all laid out in front of me. When I finally got through (took about 2 hours of waiting), the agent was able to process everything in under 10 minutes because I had everything ready. Also, they sent me a confirmation email right away, which was reassuring. The name change showed up in my online account within 3 business days. Hang in there - it's definitely doable!

•This is so encouraging to hear! 10 minutes once you got through sounds amazing. I'm definitely going to organize everything exactly like you described. Did you have to mail in any documents or was it all handled over the phone?
