Need help with SSA name change appointment - what docs to bring?
Hey everyone, I'm trying to change my name and need to make an appointment. Has anyone gone through this process recently? What documents do I need to bring? I'm a bit nervous about the whole thing and want to make sure I have everything ready. Any tips or advice would be really appreciated!

I just went through this a few months ago! Here's what you need to bring: • Valid ID (driver's license or passport) • Certified copy of your marriage certificate (if you're changing your name due to marriage) • Certified copy of your divorce decree (if you're changing your name after divorce) • Court order for name change (if it's not due to marriage or divorce) • Proof of citizenship (birth certificate or naturalization certificate) • Social Security card Make sure all your documents are originals or certified copies. They won't accept photocopies. Good luck!

•Thank you so much! This is super helpful. Do you remember how long the appointment took?

•No problem! My appointment took about 30 minutes, but I'd plan for an hour just in case. They were pretty efficient tho 👍

Pro tip: make copies of EVERYTHING before you go. like, even the stuff you dont think theyll need. better safe than sorry!

Hey, just wanted to share something that really helped me out. I used this site called claimyr.com to get someone on the phone when I was trying to schedule my appointment. It's a calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, and then connects you when a live agent picks up. It costs $20, but it saved me hours of waiting on hold. Here's the link if anyone's interested: https://www.claimyr.com

•Sounds kinda sketchy. Is it legit?

•Totally get the skepticism, but it's 100% legit. I was hesitant at first too, but it worked like a charm. Saved me so much time and frustration.

•How does it actually work? Do they just keep calling until they get through?

•Basically, yeah. They have some kind of system that navigates the phone menu and waits on hold. When a real person answers, it calls you and connects you. It's pretty slick!

Quick question - does anyone know if you need to change your name with the DMV first, or can you do Social Security first? I'm getting conflicting info online.

•You gotta do Social Security first. Then take your new SS card to the DMV to update your license. Trust me, I learned the hard way 😅

Protip: If you're changing your name cuz of marriage, do it ASAP after the wedding. I waited like a year and it was such a pain to track down all the docs I needed 😫
