How to update SSA record after becoming US citizen? Need advice ASAP!
Hey everyone, I just became a U.S. citizen and I need to update my Social Security record. Has anyone gone through this process recently? What documents do I need to bring? I'm a bit nervous about the whole thing and could use some advice on how to prepare for the call with the SSA.

Congrats on becoming a citizen! π I went through this last year. Here's what you need to do: β’ Gather your proof of citizenship (passport or naturalization certificate) β’ Call the SSA and tell them you need to update your citizenship status β’ Ask what specific documents they need β’ See if there are any forms to fill out β’ Follow up after sending documents to make sure they updated your record It's pretty straightforward, but be prepared for a wait on the phone. Good luck!

β’This is super helpful, thanks! Did you have to go to the office in person or was it all done over the phone/mail?

β’I did everything by mail. They gave me a list of what to send and where to send it during the phone call. Just make sure to send copies, not originals!

β’It took about 3-4 weeks from when I mailed the documents until I got confirmation that my record was updated. But this was pre-covid, so it might take longer now π€·ββοΈ

β’I found a way to get through! There's this site called claimyr.com that has a calling tool. It dials the menu, stays on hold, and then connects you when a real person picks up. It costs $20 but it worked for me. Here's the link: https://claimyr.com

β’Yeah, I was skeptical at first too. But I was desperate after trying for days. It really does work. The $20 was worth it for me to not lose my mind on hold music lol

Make sure you double check all your info is correct when you update! My friend had a typo in her name and it caused a huge headache later when she applied for benefits.

anyone know if this affects your social security number? or is it just updating the record?

β’It doesn't change your SSN. You keep the same one, they just update your citizenship status in their system.

Pro tip: if you're having trouble getting through on the phone, try calling right when they open in the morning. I got through pretty quick that way.

Does anyone know if this affects your ability to collect benefits? I'm worried about messing up my retirement.

β’It shouldn't affect your benefits negatively. If anything, being a citizen might make you eligible for more benefits in some cases. But def ask the SSA rep when you talk to them!

Quick question - do you need to bring your old green card when you go to update your record? I can't find mine anywhere π°

β’You shouldn't need it. Your certificate of naturalization or US passport should be enough to prove citizenship. But maybe call and double check to be sure!

Hey Malik! Congrats on your citizenship! π I just went through this process a couple months ago. Here's what worked for me: 1. Have your naturalization certificate ready (don't send the original!) 2. Call 1-800-772-1213 early in the morning - I had luck around 8:15am 3. They'll ask for your SSN and some basic info to verify your identity 4. Tell them you need to update your citizenship status 5. They'll mail you a form SS-5 to fill out and return with copies of your documents The whole process took about 2-3 weeks once I sent everything back. Make sure to keep copies of everything you send! The rep I spoke with was really helpful and walked me through exactly what I needed to do. You've got this! πͺ

β’This is exactly what I needed to hear! Thank you so much for the detailed breakdown. I was getting overwhelmed reading about all the different documents and processes online. Having someone who just went through it recently share their experience is super reassuring. I'll definitely try calling early morning and make sure to keep copies of everything. Really appreciate you taking the time to help out! π

Welcome to citizenship, Malik! πΊπΈ Just wanted to add a few tips from my experience last year: β’ Definitely make photocopies of EVERYTHING before you send anything - I learned this the hard way when they lost my first submission π β’ If you get disconnected during the call (which happened to me twice), don't panic - just call back and they can usually see notes from your previous call β’ Some local SSA offices are taking walk-ins again if phone calls aren't working out - might be worth checking your local office hours β’ The SS-5 form is pretty straightforward, but double-check that you're filling out the "change of immigration status" section correctly The hardest part honestly is just getting through on the phone. Once you talk to someone, they're usually really helpful. You'll have this sorted out in no time! Good luck! π

β’This is such great advice! I'm actually going through this process myself next month and was wondering about the local office option. Do you happen to know if they require appointments or is it really just walk-in? I've been dreading the phone wait times but if I can just show up in person that might be way less stressful. Also, when they lost your first submission, did you have to restart the whole process or could they just ask for new copies?

β’@Omar Farouk Thanks for all the helpful tips! I m'curious about the local office option too. Did you find the in-person experience faster than trying to get through on the phone? I m'in a pretty busy area so I m'wondering if the wait times at the office are better or worse than the phone queues. Also really good point about making copies of everything - I definitely don t'want to deal with lost paperwork on top of everything else!

Just want to echo what others have said - congrats on your citizenship! π I went through this update process about 6 months ago and it really wasn't as scary as I thought it would be. A few things that helped me: β’ I called at exactly 8:00am on a Tuesday and got through in about 20 minutes β’ The rep was super patient and explained everything step by step β’ Make sure your address is current with them before you start - they need to mail you forms β’ Keep a notebook handy during the call to write down reference numbers and what they tell you One thing I didn't see mentioned yet - they'll also ask if you want to register for selective service if you're male and under 26. Just a heads up so you're not caught off guard! The whole thing took about 3 weeks from start to finish for me. You've got this! πͺ

β’Thanks for the selective service heads up! I'm actually 28 so that won't apply to me, but that's definitely something I wouldn't have thought about. Good tip about keeping a notebook during the call too - I can see how easy it would be to forget important details when you're nervous. Did they give you a confirmation number or anything when you completed the process? I want to make sure I have some way to track that everything went through properly.

Hey Malik! Huge congrats on becoming a citizen! π I actually just finished this process about 2 months ago and wanted to share what worked for me. Here's my step-by-step breakdown: **Before calling:** - Have your naturalization certificate ready (keep the original safe!) - Make sure your current address is on file with SSA - Have a pen and paper ready for reference numbers **The call:** - I called 1-800-772-1213 at 8:05am on a Wednesday and got through in about 15 minutes - They'll verify your identity with SSN, DOB, and some other basic info - Tell them "I need to update my citizenship status from permanent resident to U.S. citizen" - They'll walk you through exactly what documents to send **What they mailed me:** - SS-5 form (Application for Social Security Card) - Cover letter with specific instructions - List of acceptable documents **Timeline:** - Mailed documents back within a week - Got confirmation letter about 3 weeks later - New card arrived about a week after that The rep I spoke with was really helpful and patient. Don't stress too much - they deal with this all the time! The hardest part is just getting through on the phone, but once you do, it's pretty straightforward. You've got this! πͺ Also, as someone else mentioned, definitely register to vote once this is done! π³οΈ

β’This is such a comprehensive breakdown, thank you! @Mei Chen I m'bookmarking this for when I start my process next week. Quick question - when you say new "card arrived about a week after that, do" you mean they actually send you a new Social Security card? Or is it just a confirmation that your record has been updated? I wasn t'sure if getting a new physical card was part of the process or if it s'optional.
