Need help filing for Medicare Part A at SSA office - what should I expect?
Hey everyone, I need to make an appointment at the SSA office to file for Medicare Part A. Has anyone done this recently? Any tips on what I should have ready or what to expect during the call? I'm a bit nervous about the whole process.

I just went through this process last month. Make sure you have your Social Security number handy when you call. They'll probably ask for some other personal info too, so have your ID and maybe even your birth certificate nearby just in case. Good luck!

ā¢Thanks for the advice! Did they ask you any specific questions about your work history or anything like that?

ā¢Not really, it was pretty straightforward. They mostly just verified my identity and eligibility. The whole process took about 15-20 minutes on the phone.

ā¢Wait, you got through in 20 minutes?! š± What kind of wizardry is this? I've been trying to reach them for weeks!

Ugh, good luck getting through to anyone. I've been trying to call for days and keep getting stuck on hold forever. The system is so broken š¤¬

ā¢Have you tried calling right when they open? I've had better luck getting through early in the morning.

Pro tip: I found a way to get someone on the phone without the endless hold times. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the link: https://claimyr.com

ā¢Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

ā¢I get the skepticism, but it seriously saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo. You can check their reviews online if you're unsure.

Here's a comprehensive guide for filing Medicare Part A: ⢠Eligibility: Ensure you're 65 or older, or have a qualifying disability ⢠Documents needed: Social Security card, birth certificate, proof of citizenship/legal residency ⢠Income info: They might ask about your work history to determine if you qualify for premium-free Part A ⢠Current health coverage: Have info about any existing insurance you have ⢠Preferred effective date: Know when you want your coverage to start The process is usually pretty smooth if you have everything ready. Don't stress too much, the agents are generally helpful!

ā¢Quick question - do you know if there's a deadline for signing up after turning 65?

Oliver Weber
ā¢Yes, there is! You have a 7-month Initial Enrollment Period that starts 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes your birth month, and ends 3 months after. Missing this can result in penalties, so don't sleep on it!

Just a heads up, the SSA office in my area has been doing appointments by phone only due to COVID. Might want to check if that's the case for your local office too.

ā¢Good point! Their website should have the most up-to-date info on how they're handling appointments.

I filed for Medicare Part A last year and it was actually pretty painless. The key is being prepared. Write down all your questions beforehand so you don't forget anything important during the call.

ā¢That's a great idea! I tend to get flustered on important calls. I'll definitely make a list. Any specific questions you recommend asking?

ā¢Ask about the effective date, any potential gaps in coverage, and how it'll work with any existing insurance you have. Oh, and don't forget to ask about Part B if you need it!
