Finally got through to SNAP for interview after hours on hold - Anyone else struggling?
Hey everyone, I finally got through to SNAP for my interview! It took forever, I was on hold for hours multiple times this week. But I finally got it done. Just wanted to share my experience and see if anyone else has had similar struggles with getting their SNAP benefits approved.

Congrats on finally getting through! I've been trying to reach them for weeks now. How long did you have to wait on hold this time?

ā¢Thanks! This time I was on hold for about an hour and a half. It's crazy how long the wait times are.

ā¢Wow, that's still a long time. But I guess better than not getting through at all. Did they give you any reason for the long wait times?

ā¢They said they're understaffed and dealing with a high volume of applications. Seems like everyone's struggling rn š

I found a way to get someone on the phone without waiting for hours. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/GnWMF9pWP-U

ā¢Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

ā¢20 bucks? Thats kinda steep for just a phone call...

ā¢I get the skepticism, but it seriously saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo. Plus, time is money, right? š¤·āāļø

ā¢I tried it last week and it worked for me too. Beats sitting on hold all day!

Has anyone had luck getting through using the online portal? I've been trying to avoid calling if possible.

ā¢I tried the online portal but kept getting error messages. Ended up having to call anyway š

ā¢The online portal is a joke. It's always "under maintenance" when I try to use it.

Pro tip: Try calling right when they open in the morning. I got through after only a 20 minute wait last week!

Here's a comprehensive guide on how to navigate the SNAP interview process: ⢠Prepare all necessary documents beforehand (ID, proof of income, rent/utility bills, etc.) ⢠Be ready to answer questions about your household size, income, and expenses ⢠Stay calm and patient during the interview ⢠Ask for clarification if you don't understand a question ⢠Follow up after the interview if you don't hear back within the expected timeframe Remember, the caseworkers are there to help you. Don't be afraid to ask questions or request assistance if needed. Good luck to everyone going through this process!

ā¢Same here! It's like they're allergic to returning calls or something

Just a heads up, I heard they're implementing a new phone system next month that's supposed to reduce wait times. Fingers crossed it actually works! š¤

I'm going through the same thing right now! Been trying to get my recertification interview scheduled for over a month. The wait times are absolutely ridiculous - I've been on hold for 2+ hours multiple times just to get disconnected. It's so frustrating when you're already struggling and need these benefits. Thanks for sharing your experience Maya, at least it gives me hope that I'll eventually get through! Did they schedule your follow-up appointments during the interview or do you have to call back for those too?

ā¢@ElectricDreamer I feel your pain! The recertification process is even worse than the initial application. Hang in there - it's worth the wait once you finally get through. I'm dealing with some follow-up paperwork myself and dreading having to call back. This whole system really needs an overhaul!

This is such a common struggle unfortunately! I'm currently waiting to hear back after my interview from last week. The whole process is so stressful when you're already dealing with food insecurity. Maya, did they give you any timeline on when you'll hear back about approval? I'm getting anxious because my current benefits expire soon and I still haven't heard anything. It's ridiculous that we have to jump through so many hoops just to get basic assistance when we need it most.

ā¢@Raul Neal I totally understand that anxiety! When I had my interview, they told me it usually takes 7-10 business days to get a decision, but it can take longer if they need additional documentation. Since your benefits are expiring soon, you might want to ask about expedited processing when you follow up - sometimes they can rush it if you re'in immediate need. The waiting is definitely the worst part of this whole process. Hope you hear back soon! š¤

I've been dealing with this exact same issue for the past three weeks! The wait times are absolutely insane - I've been disconnected twice after waiting over 90 minutes each time. It's so demoralizing when you're already struggling and just need help getting basic food assistance. Maya, congratulations on finally getting through! Did you have to provide any additional documentation during your interview, or were they able to process everything you had already submitted? I'm worried I might be missing something and will have to start the whole process over again. This system really needs major improvements - nobody should have to spend this much time just trying to get help when they need it most.

ā¢@Darcy Moore I m'so sorry you re'going through this too! The disconnections are the absolute worst - there s'nothing more frustrating than waiting that long just to get cut off. During my interview, they actually did ask for one additional document a (recent utility bill that) I hadn t'submitted yet, but they let me email it to them right after the call which was helpful. My advice would be to have ALL your documents ready just in case - ID, proof of income for the last 30 days, rent/mortgage statements, utility bills, bank statements, and anything else that shows your household expenses. Better to have too much than to have to call back again! The caseworker I spoke with was actually really understanding about how hard it s'been to reach them. Hang in there - you ll'get through eventually! šŖ

This thread is so helpful! I'm in the same boat - been trying to get through for my recertification for almost 6 weeks now. The longest I waited was 3 hours before getting disconnected and I literally cried. It's exhausting having to keep trying when you're already dealing with financial stress. Maya, thanks for sharing your experience - it gives me hope that persistence will eventually pay off! For anyone still struggling, I've found that Tuesday and Wednesday mornings seem to have slightly shorter wait times than Mondays or Fridays. Still long, but maybe saves you 30-45 minutes. We really shouldn't have to become experts at gaming the system just to get basic food assistance though. The whole process needs serious reform!

ā¢@Seraphina Delan Thank you for the tip about Tuesday and Wednesday mornings! I m'new to this process and honestly feeling pretty overwhelmed by all the hoops we have to jump through. It s'encouraging to see everyone supporting each other here even though we re'all dealing with the same broken system. I can t'believe you waited 3 hours just to get disconnected - that s'absolutely heartbreaking and shouldn t'happen to anyone trying to get help. Your point about becoming experts at gaming the system really hits home. We re'spending more energy figuring out how to reach them than actually getting the assistance we need. Hoping things get easier for all of us soon! š

I'm so glad you finally got through Maya! I've been in the same situation for weeks now - it's incredibly frustrating when you're already stressed about finances and then have to spend hours on hold just to get basic assistance. The system is definitely broken when people have to treat getting through to their caseworker like winning the lottery. I've been trying the early morning approach that Madison mentioned, but even then I'm looking at 45+ minute waits. It's exhausting having to block out entire chunks of your day just hoping to connect with someone. Thanks for sharing your experience though - it gives me motivation to keep trying! Did they give you a direct number or any way to reach your specific caseworker for follow-ups?

ā¢@Carmen Ruiz I m'new to this community but going through the exact same struggle! Just wanted to jump in and say you re'not alone - I ve'been on hold for hours multiple times too and it s'so demoralizing. The fact that we have to strategize about the best times to call just to get basic food assistance is really eye-opening about how broken this system is. I m'also curious about Maya s'experience with follow-up contact - hopefully they gave you a direct line or caseworker info! Thanks to everyone sharing their tips and experiences here, it s'really helpful for those of us just starting this process. We shouldn t'have to work this hard just to get help when we need it most.

I'm so sorry everyone is going through this same nightmare! I'm new to SNAP and just started the application process last week. Reading all these stories about hours-long wait times and getting disconnected is honestly terrifying - I had no idea it would be this difficult just to get through to someone. Maya, congratulations on finally completing your interview! That gives me some hope that persistence will eventually pay off. I'm dreading having to make that call but seeing how supportive this community is makes me feel less alone in this process. Does anyone have advice for first-time applicants on what to expect or how to prepare? This whole system seems designed to wear people down rather than actually help those in need.

ā¢@Romeo Barrett Welcome to the community! I m'also pretty new here but have been lurking and learning from everyone s'experiences. The wait times are definitely intimidating, but don t'let it discourage you from applying - you deserve access to food assistance! From what I ve'gathered reading through all these posts, here are some key prep tips: have ALL your documents ready ID, (pay stubs, rent receipts, utility bills, bank statements ,)try calling Tuesday/Wednesday mornings right when they open, and maybe consider that calling service Lucy mentioned if you can afford the $20. Most importantly, be patient with yourself - this process is genuinely difficult and it s'not your fault that the system is so overwhelmed. Everyone here seems super supportive so don t'hesitate to ask questions! We re'all in this together. šŖ

I'm dealing with the exact same frustration right now! Been trying to get through for my initial application interview for over two weeks. The longest I waited was 2.5 hours before the line just went dead - I was so close to tears. It's incredible that we have to treat getting basic food assistance like a full-time job just to reach someone. Maya, I'm so relieved to hear you finally got through! Did they mention anything about callback options or is it really just keep calling until you get lucky? This whole experience has been so demoralizing when you're already struggling financially. Thank you for sharing your success story though - it gives me hope that I'll eventually get my turn too! š

ā¢@Zoe Alexopoulos I m'so sorry you re'going through this too! 2.5 hours just to get disconnected is absolutely heartbreaking - I can only imagine how frustrating that must have been. I m'also new to this whole process and it s'honestly shocking how broken the system is. From what I ve'been reading in this thread, it seems like there really aren t'any callback options - just the brutal reality of calling over and over until you get through. The fact that we have to dedicate entire days to this when we re'already struggling is just wrong. But seeing Maya and others eventually succeed gives me hope that persistence will pay off for both of us! Hang in there - we shouldn t'have to fight this hard for basic food assistance, but at least we have this supportive community to help us through it. You ve'got this! š
