Will IRS refund check be forwarded to new address with USPS mail forwarding?
Been waiting on my refund for 5 months and have mail forwarding setup with USPS for past 10 months. Anyone know if they forward IRS checks or send them back? Getting super anxious about this whole situation

IRS checks specifically state 'DO NOT FORWARD' on the envelope. You need to update your address directly with the IRS using Form 8822 immediately. The check will be returned to IRS if it goes to your old address, which will cause even more delays. Call IRS or use their website to update your address ASAP.

hey everyone! instead of stressing about this stuff, I've been using taxr.ai to track my refund status. It costs $1 but it analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's happening and when to expect your check. Way better than guessing! https://taxr.ai

Had the exact same issue last year! USPS forwarding doesn't work for IRS mail - they mark it "DO NOT FORWARD" specifically. You'll need to file Form 8822 to change your address with the IRS directly. Also call the IRS refund hotline (1-800-829-1954) to let them know about the address change. If the check already went to your old address, it'll get returned to them and they'll reissue it to your new address, but expect another 4-6 weeks delay. Super frustrating but that's the process! 😤

•This is super helpful! @LordCommander definitely follow this advice - sounds like Simon went through the exact same thing. The 4-6 week delay sucks but at least you'll know what to expect. Thanks for sharing the phone number too!

Ugh this is so stressful! I'm dealing with something similar - moved 3 months ago and just realized I never updated my address with the IRS. Filed my return in January and now I'm paranoid the refund is going to my old place. Definitely going to file that Form 8822 today after reading all these comments. Why can't they just make this stuff easier?? 😫

•@Zoe Kyriakidou Don t'panic! 3 months isn t'too bad - I waited way longer 😅 The key is getting that Form 8822 filed ASAP like you said. Also check if your old address has a nice neighbor or landlord who might hold mail for you, just in case. The IRS is slow but they ll'eventually get it sorted once they have your new address on file. Hang in there!

This happened to me too! The stress is real when you're waiting that long for your refund 😰 Everyone's right about the Form 8822 - that's absolutely your first step. But also wanted to add that you can check your refund status online at irs.gov using "Where's My Refund" tool. It'll show if there are any issues or if they're trying to send it to the wrong address. Also, if you have access to your old mailbox (like if you're still friendly with new residents/landlord), might be worth giving them a heads up to watch for any IRS mail just in case. The whole system is definitely frustrating but hang in there!

•@Lucas Bey Great advice about checking Where "s'My Refund online!" I totally forgot about that tool - it actually shows you if there s'an address issue or if the refund got sent back. And yeah, definitely reach out to whoever s'at your old place if possible. When I moved last year I gave my old landlord my new address just for situations like this. The whole IRS system is so outdated but at least there are ways to track what s'happening. Thanks for the reminder about the online tool!

Just went through this nightmare myself! Filed Form 8822 back in November when I moved and STILL had issues with my refund going to the old address in January 🤦♀️ The IRS systems don't talk to each other apparently. Had to call that hotline like 5 times before someone finally noted my case and reissued the check. Definitely file the form ASAP but also call them directly - sometimes the form takes weeks to process and your refund could get sent out before they update your address in their system. So frustrating but you'll get through it! The reissued check only took about 3 weeks once they actually processed my address change.

•@Hiroshi Nakamura Wow that s'so frustrating that even filing the form in advance didn t'prevent the issue! 😤 Thanks for the heads up about calling them directly too - sounds like the phone route might be faster than waiting for the paperwork to go through their system. Did you have to provide any specific info when you called to get them to actually note your case? I m'definitely going to try both approaches now after reading everyone s'experiences here!
