WMR updated from "still processing" to "return received" but 570/971 codes remain on transcript (Cycle 0822)

My Where's My Refund tool updated overnight from the dreaded "still processing" message to showing it's been received. This is the first movement I've seen in weeks! I e-filed through TurboTax back in late March. I checked my transcript this morning too, and I still have the 570/971 codes on there with cycle date 0822. When I log into the IRS website and go to "Refunds / Refund Status / Results", I now see: "Refund Status Results Return Received ? ✓ Refund Approved ? Refund Sent ? We have received your tax return and it is being processed. Please Note: For refund information, please continue to check here, or use our free mobile app, IRS2Go. Updates to refund status are made no more than once a day." My tax year shows as 2024. This is at least showing movement from the typical "Your tax return is still being processed" message I was seeing before, but I'm confused because my transcript still shows those hold codes. Has anyone experienced this kinda mixed signal before? Does this mean my refund is actually moving along now or should I still be worried about those 570/971 codes? Is the "Return Received" status just another version of "processing" or is this actual progress? I'm getting anxious since it's been weeks with no movement until now.

This is actually a good sign! The 570 code is a refund hold, and 971 indicates a notice being sent. But the WMR update suggests the IRS has resolved whatever issue triggered those codes. Based on the cycle code 0822, your account was last updated on a Thursday of the 22nd week of 2024. I'd expect your refund to be released within 1-2 weeks. The processing phase is when they're verifying everything, and it seems you've moved past whatever was causing the delay. The notice (971) will probably just explain what happened, but the fact that WMR updated means they're already moving forward.

Thanks for the detailed info! When I click on the 971 code it says "notice issued" but I haven't received anything in the mail yet. Should I be concerned?

Not really. Mail can take 7-10 business days to arrive. Some people never even receive the notice! The important thing is that WMR updated, which is the best indicator of progress.

Happened to me last year. Got 570/971 codes but WMR updated before I ever got the notice. Refund hit my account 9 days later. The notice showed up a week after my $$$ was already deposited 😂

I was in exactly the same situation and was going crazy trying to figure out what all the transcript codes meant. I ended up using taxr.ai and it literally saved me hours of stress. It reads the transcript and explains everything in plain english - showed me that the hold was temporary and related to a simple verification. My refund was deposited 8 days after my WMR updated similar to yours. I highly recommend checking it out (https://taxr.ai) if you're still confused about what's happening with your return.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It basically analyzes all your transcript codes and explains what they mean and what's happening with your return. It also gives you a timeline of what to expect next. I was confused by all the different dates and codes but this made it super clear.

I JUST TRIED IT AND OMG THANK YOU!! This is exactly what I needed! It explained everything in my transcript and told me exactly when to expect my refund. Worth every penny for the peace of mind alone. If you're stuck in tax limbo like I was, you need to try this!

Yeah it's legit. I was skeptical too but after weeks of stressing over my transcript I gave it a shot. It's just a tool that explains all those confusing codes and dates. Saved me from having to google every little thing.

After 2 months of being stuck with those same codes, I finally got through to an actual IRS person using the Claimyr app (claimyr.com). She explained that my return was flagged for a simple verification but was already cleared. My WMR updated the next day and refund arrived 6 days later. Talking to an agent directly was the best thing I could've done - they cleared it immediately once I verified some info. Absolutely worth trying if you're stuck!

Wait, there's actually a way to talk to the IRS? I've been calling for weeks and can never get through!

Yeah it's like a miracle lol. The app basically calls for you and gets you in the queue, then calls you when an agent is available. Saved me literally hours of listening to that stupid hold music and getting disconnected.

This sounds too good to be true. Does it actually work? I've been trying to reach someone at the IRS for a month.

It really does. I was about to give up after trying for weeks. The app got me connected to someone in about 45 minutes (instead of the usual 2+ hours of trying and failing). Talking to an agent got my refund moving within 24 hours.

My transcript had those same codes last month (570/971) but my WMR was still saying 'processing' for weeks after. The 570 code usually means theres a hold on ur refund and 971 means they sent a notice explaining why. Have you gotten any mail from IRS yet? I finally got mine and it was just asking me to verify identity. Once I did that, my refund was released in like 10 days.

It's a good sign! This happened to me with my 2023 return. The WMR tool updated first, and about 3 days later my transcript cycles changed and the 570 code was released. Got my refund directly deposited a week later. The 971 notice showed up in my mailbox AFTER I already had my money lol. IRS works in mysterious ways 🤣

That gives me hope! Did you have to do anything to get the 570 code released or did it just happen automatically?

Nope, didn't do anything. Just waited (impatiently lol). The system eventually worked it out. When did your WMR update? Mine was like 6-7 days from WMR update to deposit.

It just updated last night! Been checking that stupid tool for nearly 2 months with no change until now.

Don't get your hopes up too much yet. Same thing happened to me but I ended up waiting another month after WMR updated. The 570 code is the important one - until that's resolved, your refund is still on hold. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but thats how it was for me.

That's not necessarily true for everyone. I had a 570 that cleared within a week of my WMR updating. It really depends on WHY the 570 was placed. Some are simple verification holds, others are more complex issues.

Fair point. In my case it was because they needed to verify my income from a 1099. What was frustrating is that they never told me until I finally got through on the phone.

the IRS is a total clown show. I had this EXACT situation in 2022. WMR updated but 570/971 stuck around on the transcript for weeks. Called tons of times and got different answers from every single person. Finally just got a deposit one day with no explanation 🤡 The whole system is broken.

Same experience here! The right hand never knows what the left is doing over there. My transcript and WMR were telling completely different stories. Got my money eventually but what a headache.

For my 2022 return, I had the same issue - 570/971 codes with WMR updates. The 570 code eventually resolved itself. The IRS system is automated and periodically checks returns with holds. If whatever triggered the hold is deemed resolved by their system (which appears to be happening in your case since WMR updated), the codes will clear during the next processing cycle. I agree with others - this is a positive sign!

I've been trying to interpret my transcript for weeks now (so many confusing codes!). I checked out taxr.ai because I saw it recommended here, and its actually super helpful! It explained that my 570/971 combo was just a verification hold that would resolve automatically. Sure enough, it did exactly as predicted. Might be worth checking out if you're still confused bout what's happening with your return! https://taxr.ai

Just tried it and wow! Finally understand what's happening with my return. Wish I'd known about this months ago instead of trying to decode all those transcript entries myself 👍

Check your transcript again in a few days. You'll likely see code 571 (resolving the 570 hold) and then an 846 code with your refund date. The WMR update is definitely a good sign - means the system is working through whatever the issue was. Hang in there!

Those codes drove me INSANE last year. I was stuck in tax limbo for 3+ months. Finally got a human on the phone using Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they sorted it in minutes - turns out there was just a simple verification flag on my account. My refund was released like 2 days later. It was the best money I've ever spent after wasting countless hours trying to call the IRS myself.

Does that actually work? I've tried calling the IRS like 50 times and always get the "we're experiencing high call volume" message 😤

Honestly it was the only way I could get through. The service calls and waits in the queue for you, then calls you when they have a human. Took about an hour total instead of the usual endless redial game. The agent I spoke with cleared my hold on the spot.

I might try this if nothing changes in the next week. Did they ask any security questions when you finally got through?

Yes they verified my identity with the usual stuff - name, SSN, filing status, address from return, etc. Nothing complicated, just standard security verification.
