UPDATE: ID Verification Issue - System Only Asking for 2024 Info When It Needs Both Years

UPDATE: I thought I might share my somewhat unusual verification experience, in case it helps others in a similar situation. I initially filed around 1/30/24, and it was accepted approximately 2/3/24. Since then, I've had blank transcripts and my return has been seemingly stuck in the "still being processed" status. I decided to perhaps call in last Thursday to check on everything, and was informed that I needed to verify my identity and that they had sent a letter out on 3/7/24. I received my verification letter on 3/14/24 and completed the online verification that same day. I received what appeared to be a confirmation that the verification was completed successfully. To be thorough, I called this morning to confirm everything was properly processed, and interestingly, I was told that my verification didn't fully process on their end. Apparently, the system has been experiencing some technical issues and only requesting 2024 information during the online verification process, when it should actually be requesting both 2023 and 2024 information. The representative was kind enough to verify me via phone, so now I'm hopefully fully verified and my return can be processed properly. If you've recently verified online and were only asked to provide 2024 return information, it might be worth calling to make sure your verification was fully processed! The representative also mentioned that once you're verified, you probably shouldn't check WMR or anything for about 3 weeks after verification (if you haven't received your funds by then). Interestingly, she noted that many people were being flagged for verification because they were checking transcripts and similar information before their refund was processed, which apparently triggers potential fraud alerts in their system. šŸ¤” I apologize for the somewhat lengthy post, but I thought this information might be helpful to others in a similar situation.

This is a known issue with the IRS Identity Verification Protocol (IdVP) system for the current tax season. The system architecture was updated to accommodate dual-year verification requirements, but there's a persistent integration error between the online portal and the back-end verification database. When the system fails to request both tax years' information, it creates an incomplete verification record in the Integrated Automation Technologies (IAT) system, which then prevents your return from advancing through normal processing channels. Your approach of calling to confirm was exactly the right procedure in this situation.

You know what's kind of hilarious about this? The IRS spent millions upgrading their systems to catch fraud, and now they're flagging people for... checking their own tax information. It's like installing a security system that goes off every time YOU walk into your own house! šŸ˜‚ If I were you, I'd definitely follow the advice about not checking WMR for a while. Let the system cool down and forget about you for a bit. The verification should clear the path, but sometimes you need to give the digital dust time to settle.

So does this mean we shouldn't be checking our transcripts at all? Even if we haven't been flagged for verification yet? I've been checking mine like every other day...

From my professional experience: ā€¢ Checking transcripts occasionally (1-2 times weekly) is unlikely to trigger flags ā€¢ Multiple daily checks from different IP addresses can trigger automated security protocols ā€¢ Using multiple devices to check within short timeframes increases risk ā€¢ Normal checking behavior shouldn't cause issues for most taxpayers ā€¢ System is designed to detect unusual patterns, not routine checking

Had the EXACT same thing happen to me last week! Filed 1/25, got the letter 3/8, verified online 3/9, but something felt off bc it only asked for my 2024 info. Called on 3/13 and yep - verification didn't go thru properly. Had to do the whole thing over the phone. But here's the good news - my refund hit my acct this morning! So it was only 5 days from when I got properly verified by phone till when I got paid. Def worth making that call if u did the online verification recently!

Good info. Helps to know the timeline. Makes me wonder how many people are stuck without knowing.

Did they tell you anything about why this is happening? I verified online two weeks ago and still nothing. Now I'm worried mine didn't go through either. I remember it only asked about this year's return too.

According to Internal Revenue Manual section 21.1.3.3, identity verification should be processed within 9 business days when completed correctly. If your verification has exceeded this timeframe, it's advisable to contact the IRS directly. I'm so relieved to see confirmation that calling can resolve this issue promptly.

This verification glitch is like having a door with two locks but only being given one key! You think you've gotten in, but you're still standing outside. I had a similar experience with verification last month and spent THREE DAYS trying to reach someone at the IRS. Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and was connected to an agent within 15 minutes. They confirmed my verification was incomplete and fixed it right away. My transcript updated two days later and refund came a week after that. I was shocked at how complex this whole process is - like navigating a maze where they keep changing the walls!

I think I might be having this exact issue, but I'm not entirely sure. My return has been stuck in processing for about 6 weeks now, and I did complete an online verification about 3 weeks ago. I believe it only asked for my 2024 information, though I can't remember with complete certainty. I haven't received any updates since then, which makes me wonder if perhaps my verification didn't fully process either. Maybe I should try calling to check on the status, though I'm not looking forward to potentially waiting on hold for hours.

Did your verification letter specifically mention you needed to verify for 2023 taxes? Mine did, but the online system only asked about 2024. Called on March 15th and they confirmed it wasn't enough - had to reverify by phone.

I need to share a cautionary tale here. I verified online on February 27th (exactly 23 days ago), thought everything was fine, and waited patiently. After seeing posts like this, I called yesterday and discovered my verification had NEVER processed correctly. The agent told me that approximately 42% of online verifications since February 1st have been affected by this glitch. After verifying by phone, she told me to expect my refund within 9 business days. If I hadn't called, I might have been waiting indefinitely. The system won't notify you if your verification fails!

42% failure rate? That's a massive system problem. IRS should send notices to everyone affected.

For anyone dealing with this issue, I created a timeline based on my experience and what I've seen from others: 1. If you verified online between January 29, 2024 and March 15, 2024, and were only asked about 2024 information, your verification likely didn't complete properly 2. After calling and completing phone verification, most people are seeing transcript updates within 2-5 days 3. Refunds are typically being issued 5-9 days after successful phone verification 4. The IRS updated their system on March 16, 2024 to fix this issue for new verifications, but they're not automatically fixing previously affected accounts Hope this helps others navigate this frustrating situation!
