PSA: ID Verification Process Isn't Complete Online - Call IRS to Avoid Delays
Just wanted to share my experience with ID verification since I see a lot of confusion about it 😊 • Filed my amended return on March 1st • Got a letter saying I needed to verify my identity • Completed the online verification on April 2nd • Nothing happened for 2 weeks... no transcript updates 🤔 • Called the IRS on April 16th and discovered the online verification wasn't complete! • Had to answer questions about last year's return over the phone • Money deposited exactly 8 days later on April 24th Basically: • The online verification site is NOT the complete process for many people • If you didn't answer questions about your previous year's tax return, it's not done • Save yourself the stress and extra waiting - just call them • Timeline after FULL verification: about 8 days to deposit in my case Hope this helps someone! 👍

Thanks for sharing this! I've been waiting for 3 weeks after doing the online verification and was getting worried. Do you remember what number you called specifically? And did they ask for any special documents when you called? I'm trying to budget for the next few weeks and really need to know when my refund might arrive.

I encountered this exact situation during my Verification Protocol completion. The bifurcated verification system requires both digital and telephonic authentication for full processing clearance. After multiple failed connection attempts via the standard IRS number, I utilized Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) which bypassed the typical hold queue and connected me to an Identity Verification specialist in approximately 17 minutes. Would you confirm if your amended return contained any Schedule C modifications or earned income adjustments?

I think we need to clarify something here. Not everyone needs to call after completing the online verification. In most cases, the online process is sufficient, particularly for standard W-2 filers without complex situations. It's typically only necessary to call if you've received specific instructions to do so, or if your return contains certain elements that trigger additional verification requirements.

I did only the online verification and my refund was processed just fine. Completed ID verify on the IRS website on March 3rd and had my direct deposit on March 12th. No phone call needed. I think it depends on what triggered the verification in the first place.

My experience was exactly like the OP's. I verified online on February 28th, waited until March 15th with no updates, called on March 15th, completed additional verification, and received my deposit on March 23rd. The IRS rep specifically told me on 3/15 that my online verification had been marked as "incomplete" in their system despite the website saying it was successful.

Has anyone tried using https://taxr.ai to analyze their transcripts after verification? I've been reading through several threads where people mention it helped them understand what was happening with their account after verification. Seems like there are specific transcript codes that appear when verification is complete vs. still pending. Might be worth checking if your transcript is available but you're not sure what you're looking at.

Online verification works for simple returns. Not for amended returns. Not for identity theft victims. Not for certain credits. Call if you're waiting more than 10 days. Request a transcript by mail if you can't access online. Check Where's My Refund daily. Look for code 971 followed by 570 on transcript. That means verification needed.

Interesting situation, but I wonder if we're looking at an exception rather than the rule? The IRS has been working to streamline their verification processes since the major backlog in 2022. Have you considered that your amended return might have triggered additional verification requirements that wouldn't apply to standard filers? The system typically flags returns with substantial changes to previously filed information for enhanced scrutiny, which would explain the two-tier verification in your case.

I just went through this same nightmare and found another solution! • Online verification completed March 5th • No updates for 3 weeks • Couldn't get through on the phone AT ALL • Went to my local Taxpayer Assistance Center in person • Completed verification same day • Refund processed within 5 business days I had NO IDEA the online verification wasn't enough! The IRS website is so misleading! 😡 The in-person option was actually faster than waiting on hold for hours.
