PSA: Online ID verification with IRS requires a PHONE call too - don't miss the second step!

Just wanted to share something I discovered that might save some of you time and frustration. When you verify your identity through the IRS website using that verification letter they send, you actually have to CALL them too to complete the process. There are two steps, not just one! I did the online part three weeks ago and was wondering why nothing was happening with my return. Finally called yesterday and the agent told me I still needed to complete the phone verification step to finalize everything. No wonder so many people are waiting forever! The website doesn't make this clear at all - they just send you that generic confirmation page that makes you think you're done. So if you're still waiting more than a week after online verification, definitely call them to check if you need to complete the second part.

Amara Nwosu

Tax professional here. This is absolutely correct and a common issue we see with clients. The IRS ID verification process currently requires TWO steps for many taxpayers: 1. Online verification through ID.me or the IRS portal using the letter they sent you (usually CP01H or 5071C) 2. Follow-up verification call where they ask additional security questions The IRS systems don't clearly communicate this two-step requirement, which is why many returns remain in limbo. The online portion just authenticates your identity, but the phone call is what tells their system to release your return for processing. If you've completed online verification more than 7 days ago and your transcript still shows no movement, definitely call the number on your verification letter. The hold times can be brutal, but it's necessary to complete the process.

yep this happened to me last year. I spent 2 months thinking it was being processed when actually it was just sitting there waiting for me to call šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

How long does it typically take after completing the phone verification for them to actually release the refund? Got through to them yesterday finally

Amara Nwosu

Usually 2-3 weeks after the phone verification, but it can vary. Check your transcript about a week after - you should see codes 570/571 releasing if everything went well.

The IRS is so broken. Why can't they make this clear on their website or in the letter? So many people dont even know they need to call.

Theres actually a third step no one talks about - you need to send them a carrier pigeon with your blood oath of tax compliance written on its foot šŸ¤£

If your in a rush, I highly recommend using claimyr.com to get through to an agent quickly. I was on hold for 3 hours before I gave up, used Claimyr and had an agent on the phone in 20 minutes. Best money I've spent considering I was waiting on a 4k refund.

For anyone struggling with understanding their transcripts or verification process, I've been using taxr.ai and it's seriously a game changer. It analyzed my transcript, told me exactly what was going on with my verification status, and even predicted when I'd get my refund (which was spot on!). The crazy thing is it explained in plain English what all those codes meant and what I needed to do next. So much better than trying to piece together clues from a bunch of forum posts and youtube videos. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

ElectricDreamer

It does WAY more than just read it! I uploaded my transcript and it analyzed all the codes, told me I was still pending verification (which wasn't obvious to me), explained what that meant for my timeline, and showed me what to do next. It was like having a tax pro look at it but instant. Totally changed my stress level once I understood what was happening.

OMG I just tried it and WOW! I've been staring at my transcript for weeks trying to figure out what was happening. This tool pointed out my verification was incomplete within seconds and now I know exactly what to do. EVERYONE dealing with the IRS needs to know about this!!

Yeah there's a cost but it was worth every penny for me. The IRS site just gives you the raw transcript - this actually explains what it means and what to do. Saved me hours of research and probably weeks of waiting.

I was stuck in verification hell for TWO MONTHS until I found a way to get through to an actual human at the IRS. After the online verification, I waited and waited with no updates. Finally used claimyr.com to get a callback from the IRS and found out I needed to complete the phone verification part. Got it done right there on the spot and my refund was released 9 days later. Getting through to a live agent made all the difference - would have been waiting forever otherwise. If you're stuck, definitely worth checking out.

is that service legit? seems sketchy to use a third party just to call the IRS

I was skeptical too but it worked perfectly. They basically just navigate the IRS phone tree and hold in line for you, then call you when an agent is ready. Talking to an agent got my refund released after months of waiting. After trying for days myself and never getting through, it was a relief.

THIS IS FALSE INFORMATION. I verified online with ID.me and got my refund 2 weeks later without ever making a phone call. Don't spread misinformation please.

It depends on your specific verification letter and situation. Some people only need online verification, others need both steps. That's why the process is so confusing.

youre both right. my wife only needed online, i needed both. different letters, different requirements. the IRS isnt consistent at all

I'm still confused... what number are you supposed to call? The general IRS number or is there a specific verification hotline? My letter (5071C) just mentions completing verification online.

0 coins

-

Oliver Fischer

Call the number specifically listed on your verification letter. It's usually a dedicated line for identity verification (different from the main IRS number).

Here's another tip: when you do get through, ask the agent to UPDATE YOUR ADDRESS even if it hasn't changed. For some reason this helps push the verification through faster. The agent told me this off the record and my refund was processed within a week after being stuck for months. weird but it works!

If it was really about identity theft they'd make the process clear and efficient. This is deliberately convoluted.

Fun fact: did you know the IRS sends different verification letters that require different steps? Some require ONLY online, some require ONLY phone, and some require BOTH. Why make a standardized system when you can have three different ones? šŸ¤”

Former IRS employee here. This is a common issue and OP is correct. The verification system was designed where the online portion verifies your identity, but the phone call is what actually releases the hold on your return. It's not well communicated because the systems don't talk to each other properly. If your return has a potential identity theft marker, completing just the online step doesn't remove that marker - only a phone agent can do that after additional verification.

0 coins

-

Luca Greco

Thanks for the insider perspective! Question: is there any way to tell from our transcript if we need the phone verification specifically?

0 coins

-

19d

Zara Malik

Unfortunately not really. The transcript codes (570/971) just show a generic hold and notice issued, nothing specific about verification status. Best indicator is if more than 2 weeks have passed since online verification with no movement.

Is there any particular department we should ask for when calling? Last time I called I got transferred 3 times and nobody could help me.

Ask specifically for the Identity Verification department. If you're calling the number on your verification letter you should reach them directly, but if not, request that specific department.

Can confirm this is true. Did my verification online in march and nothing happened. Finally called in may and they said "oh we've been waiting for you to call." Why didn't they tell me that?! Refund came 2 weeks after I called.

what questions do they ask during the phone verification? i hate being put on the spot and want to be prepared

They'll ask about previous addresses, loan information, credit cards you have/had, sometimes car loan info - basically stuff only you would know from your credit report. Also details from your tax return like specific line amounts.

How does it work? Do you just upload your transcript?

0 coins

-

19d

Andre Lefebvre

Yep - you download your transcript from the IRS site and upload it there. It analyzes all the codes and tells you exactly what's happening and what to do next. For me it caught that I still needed to call for verification which wasn't obvious from just looking at the transcript.

Wait, so lemme get this straight. The IRS sends a letter saying "verify online" but secretly you also need to call, but they don't tell you that? And then they just let your return sit there for months??? Make it make sense!

My theory is that they're intentionally making it confusing to reduce the number of refunds they have to pay out quickly. People give up or miss steps = free loan for the government.

Does this apply to ALL verification letters or just specific ones? I got a 5071C letter, verified online, and got my refund 3 weeks later without calling. Just wondering if different letters have different requirements?

0 coins

-

Amara Eze

It varies by letter and individual situation. Not everyone needs both steps, but many do. The issue is you don't know which category you're in until you either get your refund or wait too long with no updates.

If you're struggling to get through on the phone, try claimyr.com - it got me connected to an IRS agent in about 40 minutes after I spent days trying on my own with no luck. The agent confirmed I needed to complete the phone verification (which wasn't mentioned in my letter) and processed it right there. My refund was deposited a week later after being stuck for months.
