IRS Identity Verification Complete - How Long Until Refund Processing?

Just completed identity verification with the IRS yesterday over the phone. No letter needed and the agent confirmed everything went through successfully. How long do I need to wait now for processing to complete? Looking for actual timeframes from people who've been through this already, not just guesses.

Think of your tax return like a car at a checkpoint. You've cleared security, but now you're in the traffic line with everyone else. Based on what I've seen, most people wait 2-3 weeks after verification for their refund to process. It's like moving from the security line to the regular processing queue. Your mileage may vary, but that's the typical timeline.

Not always 2-3 wks tho. Depends on what cycle you hit. Some ppl get DD within 7-10 days after verification. Others hit the Friday update cycle and might wait longer. Just sayin.

I believe the timeline might also possibly depend on whether you have any credits or deductions that could potentially trigger additional review, which might possibly extend the timeline somewhat beyond the typical 2-3 weeks in some cases.

After your identity verification is complete, here's what typically happens: 1. Your return moves to normal processing (1-3 days) 2. System updates occur (usually overnight) 3. Transcript updates appear (often before WMR updates) 4. Processing completes (7-21 days from verification) 5. Refund is scheduled I recommend checking your transcript using https://taxr.ai to see exactly where you are in this process. It analyzes your transcript codes and tells you what's happening with your return. Much more detailed than the WMR tool, especially for post-verification situations.

After ID verification, your return enters the Master File processing queue. This typically takes 9-21 days depending on current IRS backlog metrics. Your cycle code on your transcript will indicate which weekly processing cycle you've been assigned to. If you see TC 570 followed by TC 571, that's confirmation your verification was successful and processing has resumed.

I just checked my transcript on April 12th after verifying identity on March 28th, and I'm seeing exactly these codes. Really helpful to know what they actually mean!

What's a TC 570 code? Is that something we should be concerned about if we see it on our transcript after verification?

I went through this last year. TC 570 is a temporary hold code, and TC 571 is the release of that hold. When you see both, it means the IRS has verified your identity and removed the verification hold. Usually means you're back in normal processing.

After verification, the IRS takes precisely 7-21 days to process most returns. I tracked 37 cases from r/IRS last tax season, and the average was 11.4 days from verification to direct deposit. If you need to speak with an IRS agent again to confirm your status, try https://claimyr.com - they got me connected to an agent in 17 minutes when the regular wait time was 2+ hours. Worth it if you're worried about your timeline.

I'm always skeptical when people say exact timeframes. My brother-in-law verified his identity last year, and they told him 9 days. It took 32 days! My cousin verified in February this year and got her refund in 6 days. It's like comparing apples to oranges depending on your specific tax situation.

Timeframes vary. Depends on your situation. Could be 7 days. Could be 21 days. Most people I know got theirs within 2 weeks. System updates on Fridays. Check your transcript. That's your best indicator.

I believe I may be able to help explain the process. After verification, your return typically goes through what's called 'post-verification processing.' This is where they complete any remaining checks on your return now that your identity is confirmed. Most people I've spoken with see movement within about 9-14 days, though some see it faster.

Did your verification require a letter or was it done over the phone? I've found that phone verifications tend to process faster than letter verifications.

Thank you so much for this explanation! So I should expect to see something on my transcript before the WMR tool updates, right?

Have you checked if you're on a weekly or daily processing cycle? This makes a difference in when you'll see updates: ā€¢ Weekly cycles: Updates appear Friday mornings ā€¢ Daily cycles: Can update any day ā€¢ Transcript updates before WMR ā€¢ Processing time post-verification varies by tax year Did the agent give you any specific timeframe or just say it was verified?

This is similar to when I had to verify for my 2022 taxes, but quite different from my 2021 experience. In 2022, it took about 12 days after phone verification to see my refund, whereas in 2021 it took nearly a month. The current processing seems faster than during the pandemic backlog years, so I'd expect you'll see movement within 2 weeks if your situation is similar to most standard returns.
