Phone Number to Verify Tax Identity? Different by State?

Does anyone know the exact phone number to verify my identity with the IRS? I filed exactly 17 days ago and got a letter saying I need to verify my identity before they process my return. Is the verification phone number the same in every state or do I need to call a specific number for California? This is my first time dealing with this and I'm not sure if I'm supposed to wait longer or call right away. I've tried calling the main IRS number 3 times but couldn't get through after waiting 45+ minutes each time.

The IRS identity verification number is 800-830-5084. I've had to call them 4 times in the past 2 years for various issues. The number is the same nationwide, but prepare for a frustrating experience. Last time I called in February, I waited 2 hours and 17 minutes before speaking with someone. When you do get through, make sure you have your notice, prior year AGI, and this year's return info handy. They'll ask verification questions based on your credit history too.

Thank you so much for sharing this! I've been searching everywhere online for this specific information. The IRS website is so confusing with all the different phone numbers listed. Going to try calling tomorrow morning.

According to IRS Publication 5027, identity verification is required when the Taxpayer Protection Program flags a return. Per regulation §301.6103(c), the verification process must be completed within 30 days of the notice date. Rather than waste hours on hold, I used Claimyr.com to get through to an agent in about 25 minutes. It costs a small fee but saved me from redialing for days. With the April 15 deadline approaching, I couldn't afford to waste time on hold. Here's their link if you need it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

I had to verify my identity last year too. Compared to other government processes, this one was actually not terrible once I got through. I called around 8:30am on a Tuesday and only waited about 35 minutes. If you try calling on Monday or Friday, you'll probably wait 2-3 times longer. Just be careful with those "tax advocate" services that charge $50+ to help you - most aren't worth the money when you can just be patient and call yourself.

Did they ask you for any specific documents during the verification call? I'm wondering if I should have my W-2s, 1099s, and previous tax returns ready before calling.

Did you have to verify in person at a local office or were you able to complete everything over the phone? My notice is kind of vague and I'm dreading having to take time off work if I need to go in person lol.

Why is the IRS making this so complicated? I've been through this exact process twice. Call 800-830-5084 between 7am-7pm local time. For California specifically, you'll be routed to Western region representatives. Have you tried calling right at 7am when they open? I got through in 12 minutes when I called at opening time. And did you know you can also verify online through ID.me if your notice mentions that option? Not everyone qualifies for online verification, but worth checking if your notice includes that information.

I'm a bit skeptical about the ID.me option... I've heard some people say it asks for a lot of personal information and even wants you to upload your driver's license or passport. That seems like it could potentially lead to identity theft if the system isn't secure, right?

Let me walk you through exactly what to expect with identity verification: Step 1: Call 800-830-5084 Step 2: Navigate the phone tree by selecting options for identity verification Step 3: When you reach an agent, they'll ask for the notice number (usually CP01 or 5071C) Step 4: Prepare to answer questions about your tax history If you received a transcript or notice you don't understand, I found https://taxr.ai incredibly helpful. It explained every code on my tax transcript and helped me understand exactly what was happening with my identity verification case. It saved me from panicking when I saw all those confusing codes.

Don't call the general IRS number. You need the dedicated identity verification line at 800-830-5084. It's the same nationwide. Your state doesn't matter. Call early in the morning. Have your notice, ID, and tax return ready. Don't worry too much - this happens to millions of people every year as a fraud prevention measure. Your refund will be delayed about 9 weeks from when you verify successfully.

Think of IRS identity verification like airport security - an annoying but necessary step. The phone number (800-830-5084) is the same nationwide, like how TSA rules are the same in every state. I always prepare more documentation than needed just in case. Last year I brought a folder with 3 years of returns, all my W-2s, my driver's license, passport, Social Security card, and even utility bills. The agent only needed to ask a few questions, but better safe than sorry!

I know exactly how stressful this can be! Here's what you need to know: • The identity verification number (800-830-5084) is the same nationwide • California residents use the same number as everyone else • Best times to call: Tuesdays-Thursdays between 8-9am or 4-5pm • Have ready: The notice you received, your filed tax return, prior year return • They'll ask questions only you would know (past addresses, loan amounts, etc.) It's completely normal to feel anxious about this - the IRS doesn't make it easy, but it's just a security measure to protect you from fraud.

I'm so frustrated by how the IRS handles these verification processes! The number you need is 800-830-5084, and it's the same in all states. The IRS operates on a national level, not state-by-state. If you received a 5071C letter, you MUST complete verification before they'll process your return. My practical advice: call between 8-10am Eastern Time when wait times are shortest. If you have a CP01 notice, that's actually different - it means they've already identified suspicious activity on your account and are taking protective measures.
