Identity Verification Letter Arrived Today - Timeline and WMR Still Processing

Just wanted to share my experience with this year's verification process. I'm finally getting my identity verification letter TODAY (3/26) in the mail. For context, I filed on 1/22, got accepted 1/24 (even before the IRS officially opened for the season). I had to request a re-send of the verification letter on 3/12 after not receiving the first one, and it took exactly 2 weeks to arrive. My online IRS account has been showing "verify return" in the notifications section this whole time. WMR still says "still processing" and my transcripts show N/A for 2024. I've been through verification before, but this year has been particularly frustrating given my tax liability situation. I know my rights as a taxpayer and I've been methodically documenting everything. Hoping this timeline helps someone else in the same boat. I'll update once I complete verification and see movement on my account.

Thanks for sharing your timeline. This is actually pretty common this tax season. Here's what you need to know: • The "verify return" notification is part of IRS identity protection measures • When you complete verification, expect 9-10 weeks for full processing • Transcripts showing N/A is normal during verification holds • Filing early (before official opening) sometimes triggers these reviews • Keep documentation of when you received and responded to the letter The good news is that once verified, your return should move through the system.

I'm going through something similar right now. Last year I had no verification issues at all, but this year I got the same notification. Do you know if there's a way to verify identity online instead of waiting for the letter? I've been checking WMR daily with no change.

In my experience, verification letters take exactly 14 days to arrive after requesting a resend. I waited 27 days for the first letter that never came, called on February 17th, and received the new letter on March 3rd. After verifying, it took exactly 21 days for my refund to be released. The transcript updated 3 days before the deposit hit my account.

Does the verification process differ for those who claimed certain credits? According to IRS Publication 1345, identity verification requirements can vary based on claimed credits and filing history.

Verification requirements do vary by situation. Unlike standard verification which might take 2-3 weeks to process, returns with EITC or CTC can take longer even after verification. I've seen similar cases where early filers (before official season opening) had more verification hurdles compared to those who filed mid-February.

Have you tried using https://taxr.ai to analyze your transcript situation? I was in verification limbo earlier this year and couldn't make sense of all the codes that appeared after verification. The tool explained what each code meant for my specific situation and gave me a much clearer timeline than the IRS rep did. It also predicted when my transcript would update next, which was surprisingly accurate. Would be curious if it helps with your verification timeline too?

Idk about these transcript reading tools tbh. Can't you just google the codes? Not sure what special info they could provide that isn't already available for free on the IRS site or tax forums.

The TC 570 and 971 combination on transcripts post-verification has specific implications. I used taxr.ai after my verification was processed and it accurately predicted my DDD based on the specific sequence of codes. The IRS cycle posting patterns are complex but follow predictable patterns once you understand the system.

Reading tax transcripts is like trying to decipher hieroglyphics without a Rosetta Stone. Does this tool actually explain what actions you need to take, or just tell you what's happening?

Been through this twice now. First time took forever. Second time was faster. Verification is a pain. Delays everything. Got my refund eventually though. Worth the wait. Just follow the instructions exactly. Don't skip any steps. Call if you need to. Be persistent.

I went through this exact situation last month. After getting my verification letter, I tried calling the IRS verification line for three days straight - constant busy signals or disconnects. Finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to an agent. They connected me in about 30 minutes when I'd been trying unsuccessfully for days. The agent was able to verify my identity over the phone instead of waiting for the mail-in process. My transcripts updated just 4 days later. Might be worth considering if you want to speed things up.

It seems like your verification process is actually moving along somewhat normally, though perhaps a bit slower than ideal. Once you complete the verification (which I believe you can possibly do online through ID.me if you have an online account), your return should, in most cases, resume processing within approximately 2-3 weeks. The transcript will likely update before WMR does - typically on Thursday night/Friday morning if you're on a weekly processing cycle. The verification step is, unfortunately, becoming more common as the IRS attempts to reduce fraud, especially for early filers.

I dealt with this same verification issue this year. Here's exactly what worked for me: 1. I received my verification letter on February 18th 2. Called the number on the letter that same day 3. Answered all their security questions (have your previous tax return handy!) 4. Agent confirmed my identity over the phone 5. Was told to wait 9 weeks for processing 6. Transcript updated after just 3 weeks 7. Refund deposited 4 days after transcript updated The key was calling rather than mailing back the form. Phone verification is processed much faster in my experience.

OMG this verification stuff is SO frustrating! 😤 I've been researching this extensively and found that the IRS is flagging WAY more returns for verification this year! Apparently there's been a huge spike in tax identity theft, so they're being extra cautious. I'm super curious - did your letter have a 5071C code on it? That specific verification type seems to be taking longer than the 4883C letters. Either way, hang in there! Most people I've talked to are getting their refunds about 3-4 weeks after completing verification.
