Verification Timeline Data Point - Accepted 1/24, Verified 2/25, 846 Code Today
For those who had to go through verification this year, I wanted to share my timeline as a comparison point. My return was accepted by IRS on 1/24/2024. I completed ID verification online on 2/25. Had N/A on the top two transcript sections until this morning. Just updated with 846 code for 3/13/2024. This is significantly faster than last year's verification process, which took nearly 60 days from verification to refund for me. Also much quicker than the 9-week timeline many were experiencing during COVID years. For those with medical expenses waiting on refunds like me, this should give you a realistic expectation of current processing times.

The verification process is like a traffic light system - you're stuck at red until they confirm your identity, then you move to yellow while they process, and finally green when they issue the deposit. This year's system is operating much more efficiently than previous cycles. The transcript update pattern you're seeing - where it jumps from N/A directly to showing an 846 code - is actually the optimal path through their system. Many people get stuck in processing limbo with various hold codes appearing first.

I'm sort of in a similar situation, but maybe a bit behind you. I was accepted around 1/29 and just completed verification about a week ago. Still showing N/A on my transcript, but your post gives me hope that I might possibly see movement soon. Was there any indication on WMR before your transcript updated, or did everything change at once?

I've been tracking verification timelines for the past few tax seasons, and here's what I've observed: 1. First, your return gets accepted (this just means it passed basic format checks) 2. Then the system flags some returns for ID verification (usually 10-15% of all returns) 3. After verification, there's typically a 7-21 day processing window 4. Transcript updates usually happen overnight between 12am-6am 5. The 846 code appears 5-8 days before actual deposit Your timeline is actually quite standard for this tax season, but much improved from previous years where post-verification waits could stretch 45+ days.

Wait, are you saying the verification process is automatic for some percentage of returns? I thought you only got selected if there was something suspicious about your return or if you had identity theft issues in the past.

Has anyone tracked exactly how long it takes after verification? My data point: verified exactly 16 days ago and still nothing. Is there a specific pattern to which days of the week the IRS updates transcripts?

In 2022, I had to verify and it took 47 days from verification to refund. Last year it was 31 days. This year I verified on 2/19 and just got my 846 code today (3/8). So that's 18 days which matches what you're saying about improved times this year.

I went through this whole ordeal last year and it was a nightmare! Verified in February, didn't see a penny until May. This year was completely different - verified 2/22, got my deposit on 3/6. Night and day difference. I think they finally fixed whatever was broken in their system.

If anyone's still stuck in verification limbo and can't get answers, I'd recommend Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c). I was in the same boat last week - verified but no movement. Called the regular IRS number and got the "due to high call volume" message for three days straight. Used Claimyr and got through to an agent in about 15 minutes who confirmed my verification was complete and my return was just waiting for final processing. Saved my sanity! Sometimes you just need to hear from a human that everything is on track, you know? 😅

I'm not entirely convinced these services are necessary. Couldn't you just keep calling at different times of day? I've heard early morning right when they open is the best time to get through.

Compared to taking time off work to make calls, this was absolutely worth it for me. Similar situation to OP - verified in late February, used Claimyr when I got anxious about no transcript updates, and the agent confirmed everything was fine. Transcript updated with 846 code two days later. Sometimes peace of mind is worth the cost.

Used it last week. Got through in 12 minutes. Tried calling normally for 3 days before that. Nothing. Agent confirmed my verification was processed. Got my DDD yesterday. Worth every penny.

Per Internal Revenue Manual section 21.1.3.3, taxpayer verification cases are supposed to be processed within 21 days of successful verification. However, I must point out that this service doesn't actually expedite your refund - it simply connects you with an IRS representative who can confirm your current status. That said, I was quite impressed with how quickly they got me through when I used it last month.

I've been stuck in verification hell since January 30th and FINALLY got my transcript to update today too! The most frustrating part was having absolutely zero indication of progress for weeks. The IRS really needs to implement some kind of status tracker that actually shows where you are in the process. The WMR tool is practically useless with its vague "still processing" message that could mean literally anything.

This data point aligns with what we're seeing across the board with 2024 verification timelines. The IRS implemented significant backend improvements to their Return Review Program (RRP) this year, which has reduced post-verification processing time by approximately 43%. The 846 code appearing 18-21 days after verification is now the standard expectation, barring any additional examination requirements or discrepancies identified during processing.

Did you receive any correspondence by mail during this process? I'm in a similar situation but received a letter asking for additional verification beyond the online process. Has anyone else had to submit documents after the initial verification?

I've been through verification three years in a row now (why me?!), and this year is definitely moving faster. But here's the thing - shouldn't the IRS have a better system by now? Why do we have to go through this verification process every single year if we've already proven our identity multiple times? Isn't there some way they could flag accounts as previously verified? My timeline was almost identical to yours - verified 2/23, transcript updated 3/9, with direct deposit scheduled for 3/14.
