Filed 1/31, Verified Identity 2/21, Still No Transcript Updates

Hey tax folks! I e-filed my 2023 return on January 31st with all the standard protocols in place. Got a verification request from the IRS portal on February 21st which I completed same-day. It's now been 6+ weeks since filing and my transcript is still showing N/A for 2023. WMR just says "still processing" with no bars. I need this refund ASAP for some upcoming medical procedures I've been postponing. Has anyone else experienced this delay after ID verification? Any insight on typical processing timeframes post-verification?

Ellie Simpson

Post-verification processing typically follows this timeline: • ID verification adds 9-21 days to standard processing • System updates often occur weekly (Wednesday/Thursday nights) • Transcripts typically update before WMR shows movement • Most returns with verification complete by 2/21 should be updating now • Medical necessity doesn't expedite processing, unfortunately Your timeline suggests you're right at the outer edge of normal processing. Have you checked your Account transcript rather than just Return transcript? Sometimes account updates show pending refund actions before the return transcript populates.

This is probably the most thorough explanation I've seen about post-verification timelines. I believe you're right that checking the Account transcript might show some activity before the Return transcript updates, which is something many people don't realize.

You're in that post-verification limbo that's like being stuck in airport security after they've already checked your ID. The system knows who you are but you're still waiting to board your flight! With medical procedures pending, I wouldn't wait any longer - time is critical. I used Claimyr last week (https://www.claimyr.com) when I was in a similar situation and they got me connected to an actual IRS agent in about 15 minutes instead of the hours I spent on redial hell. The agent was able to see notes on my account that weren't showing up online and gave me an exact date for my refund.

While third-party services like Claimyr may facilitate connections to IRS representatives, pursuant to Internal Revenue Manual 21.1.3.3, taxpayers should be aware that IRS agents are bound by the same processing constraints regardless of how the contact is initiated. The service cannot technically expedite processing unless specific hardship criteria under IRC Section 6343(a)(1)(D) are met.

I remember last year when I was stuck in processing after verification too. Did the IRS agent actually tell you anything helpful? I'm worried about paying for a service and then just getting the same "keep waiting" answer I get from the automated system.

Have u checked ur transcript for cycle codes? Sometimes after verification there's a TC 570 (hold) followed by a TC 571 (release) but it doesn't update the WMR. Also, did u have any credits like CTC or EIC that might put u under PATH Act review?

I went through something similar last year. Had verification in February, then nothing for weeks. When my transcript finally updated, it showed a sequence of codes that had actually been processing the whole time. Isn't it frustrating how the system works behind the scenes without telling you anything? My cycle code was 20230805, which meant updates happened on Thursdays, but didn't show until Fridays. Might be worth checking which cycle your previous year's return was on.

Your situation is almost identical to what my sister experienced this year - filed early February, verified late February, and waited until mid-March with no updates. What helped her was using https://taxr.ai to analyze her transcript once it finally appeared. Unlike trying to decode the transcript yourself (which is like reading hieroglyphics if you're not a tax pro), it explained each code and what it meant for her specific situation. Compared to previous years when she just kept checking WMR, this gave her much more insight into what was actually happening with her return.

I think I might be able to help... I had almost the exact same timeline (filed 1/29, verified 2/18) and just got my deposit yesterday. What finally worked was calling the IRS Tax Advocate Service at 877-777-4778. I was... hesitant to call at first because of the wait times, but they can sometimes see if there's an actual issue holding things up. In my case, there was a small discrepancy between my reported withholding and what my employer reported, but it wasn't enough to trigger a notice. They released the hold while I was on the phone and my transcript updated the next day.

Did they actually expedite your refund through the Tax Advocate Service? TAS typically won't take cases just for processing delays unless there's a demonstrated financial hardship. Were you able to document the medical necessity?

Last year I was in your exact situation - needed my refund for medical expenses and was stuck in verification limbo. I remember checking the IRS website literally 5 times a day! What I learned is that the verification process puts you into a different processing queue, and sometimes returns get manually reviewed after verification even if everything is perfect. Mine took exactly 25 days after verification to process. If you need funds urgently for medical procedures, you might want to explore Care Credit or similar medical financing options as a backup plan - that's what I ended up doing, then paid it off when my refund finally arrived.
