For Those Who Had to Verify Identity - How Long Until Refund After Verification?

So I had to verify my identity for my 2023 taxes - happens every few years to me despite my income level 🙄 I completed the verification exactly a week ago today. I know the IRS says it can take "up to 9 weeks" but I'm hoping for some real-world experiences. Has anyone else gone through verification recently? How long did it actually take to see movement or get your deposit? Did you run into any additional issues after verifying? I've got a property tax payment coming up that I was counting on this refund for, so I'm checking WMR obsessively. Just looking for some hope from others who've been through this process recently!

Been there, done that! Verified my ID back in Feb and saw movement in abt 10 days. WMR updated first, then transcript. DDD came 5 days after that. Def faster than the 9 wks they warn u about! Hang in there, ur prob close to seeing something.

The verification processing timeline varies significantly based on your filing pattern and specific verification trigger. In my experience, post-verification processing typically follows one of three paths. I had a similar situation and used taxr.ai to decode my transcript after verification. It helped me understand the specific hold codes and gave me a much clearer timeline estimate than the generic IRS guidance. The analysis showed exactly which verification path my return was following and predicted my deposit date within 48 hours of accuracy.

OMG I was FREAKING OUT about this same thing last month!!! I verified on March 12th and got my refund on March 28th. That's 16 days total. I was checking WMR like 3 times a day because I needed that money for my car payment! 😩 The bars disappeared completely for about a week after verification which made me panic even more, but then it suddenly went to approved without warning.

Did you verify online or by phone? What specific verification method did they require? I've found the timeline varies dramatically depending on these factors. For those stuck in verification limbo, I've recommended Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) to several community members here. Getting through to an actual IRS agent can cut weeks off your wait time. One person I helped last week was able to confirm their verification was complete but stuck in a queue - the agent manually pushed it through after they called!

According to Internal Revenue Manual 21.5.6, identity verification processing should be completed within 21 days for straightforward cases. However, if your return contains certain credits or deductions that require additional scrutiny under IRC 6428 guidelines, this can extend the timeline. I recommend requesting a Tax Account Transcript rather than just a Return Transcript - it will show processing codes that indicate exactly where you are in the verification pipeline.

I second checking your tax account transcript! I created a spreadsheet tracking my verification timeline last year with specific codes. After 570 (additional account action pending), watch for 971 (notice issued) followed by 290 (additional tax assessed) or 571 (resolved additional account action). When you see 846 (refund issued), you're 2-3 days from deposit. TaxSlayer.com/tools/refund-calculator also has a good explanation of these codes.

I verified exactly 13 days ago and got my refund this morning! My timeline was: verified on April 2nd, WMR updated to approved on April 12th, and deposit hit my account at 3:27am today. My refund was $14,382 due to a large business loss carryover, so I was worried the size might cause additional delays, but it processed right on schedule once verification was complete.

The collective wisdom here is that verification adds 10-21 days to processing, but there are outliers in both directions. 😂 I've seen people get deposits 5 days after verification and others who waited 6+ weeks. The key factors seem to be: 1) Whether you verified online vs. by mail/phone, 2) The specific reason you were flagged for verification, and 3) Whether you have other potential review factors on your return. If you verified online and have a straightforward return, you're likely in the 2-week range.

Just went through this exact situation! I verified my identity on March 2nd and got my refund deposited on March 18th - so 16 days total. Like others mentioned, my WMR bars completely disappeared for about 10 days which had me panicking, but then it suddenly jumped to "approved" with a deposit date. The transcript codes were super helpful to track - I saw the 971 notice code first, then 846 refund issued about 3 days before the actual deposit. Definitely check your transcript if you haven't already, it gives you way more info than WMR. Fingers crossed yours processes soon since you're already a week in! 🤞
