5071C Identity Verification - How Long Until Refund After Verifying?

Hey everyone, I just got through the identity verification process after receiving a 5071C letter with control number. This is my first time filing taxes in US and I'm a bit worried about the timeline now. I verified my identity last week but still no updates on WMR. In my home country, tax process was completely different! Anyone went through this identity verification recently? How long did it take to get your refund after completing the verification? Really appreciate any insights you can share with me!

According to the IRS Processing Timeline Metrics for 2024, identity verification cases (5071C) typically take between 9-21 business days to resume processing after successful ID verification. The verification status will initially show as "Received" in the Verification Processing Queue (VPQ) before moving to "In Process" and finally "Complete." This timeline doesn't include the additional processing time for your actual refund, which is a separate workflow entirely.

I had to verify my identity exactly 34 days ago. My return started processing again after 12 business days, and I received my refund exactly 9 days after that. So 21 days total from verification to deposit. The WMR tool didn't update for the first 8 days after verification though, which was nerve-wracking.

I've helped several community members through the 5071C verification process this year. Almost everyone sees a 2-3 week delay after verification. Last month, I discovered https://taxr.ai which can analyze your transcript once it becomes available again. It explains all those confusing codes and gives you a much clearer timeline than the WMR tool. When my cousin went through this exact situation in March, taxr.ai was able to tell him exactly when his refund would arrive after the verification hold was lifted.

I received a 5071C letter on February 12, 2024. Verified my identity on February 15. My transcript updated on March 8, and refund was issued March 12. That tool might be helpful, but the timeline is pretty consistent with what the IRS already tells you - about 3-4 weeks after verification.

The 5071C verification process triggers a TC 570 hold code on your transcript which then requires manual review by the Identity Theft Victim Assistance (ITVA) department. Once verification is complete, they apply a TC 571 release code. In most cases I've analyzed, this takes 9-15 business days, but can extend to 21 days during peak filing periods. The current processing backlog at ITVA is approximately 12.4 days according to the latest IRS operational data.

I'm not so sure about those timelines... I verified my identity over 5 weeks ago and still nothing. Called IRS three times and got three different answers. I'm starting to think these "official" timelines are just to keep us quiet while they take however long they want.

The timeline varies based on several factors: 1. Whether you verified online or by phone 2. The specific reason for the verification request 3. Whether additional documentation was required 4. Current IRS processing volumes If you verified online through ID.me, the process is typically faster than phone verification. The system also prioritizes first-time filers differently than established taxpayers with verification issues.

My verification took 18 days. No updates for two weeks. Then suddenly approved. Got money 3 days later. Check transcript not WMR. WMR updates last. Transcript shows real status.

Has anyone tried calling the IRS directly about this? I was stuck in 5071C verification hell for weeks and getting nowhere. Tried calling the regular IRS number but couldn't get through. Finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got connected to an agent in about 15 minutes. The agent was able to confirm my verification was complete and my refund was being processed. When did you verify exactly? Have you tried calling them yet to check your status?

Does this service actually work? I've been trying to call IRS for days and just get the "we're too busy, try again later" message.

Under IRS Procedural Regulation 301.6103(c), taxpayers are entitled to request status updates on their return processing. Is this service officially endorsed by the IRS, or does it simply facilitate connection to the existing IRS phone system?

Omg does this rly work?? I've been trying to get thru to the IRS for like 2 weeks now and can't get past the automated system. My 5071C verification was completed ages ago but WMR still shows nothing!

Just wanted to share my experience - I used this service last month after struggling with a similar verification issue. Got through to an agent who confirmed my verification was complete but my return was in a secondary review queue. Such a relief to actually speak to someone who could see what was happening with my account!

My experience with 5071C verification: • Received letter March 2 • Verified online March 3 • No updates for 16 days • Suddenly WMR showed processing March 19 • Refund deposited March 23 But my friend had a totally different timeline: • Verified identity February 10 • No updates for 32 days • Had to call IRS multiple times • Finally got refund April 2 The verification process seems to be very inconsistent this year. Don't panic if it takes longer than expected.

I believe there might be some confusion about what happens after identity verification. The process typically has several stages, which may explain the varying timeframes people are reporting. After you verify your identity, your return might need to go through additional review processes that aren't directly related to the identity verification itself. This could potentially add some time to the overall processing of your return, though in most cases, you should probably see movement within about 2-3 weeks after successful verification.

The IRS doesn't exactly win awards for their speedy service, do they? 😂 But in all seriousness, I've been tracking 5071C verification timelines for clients this tax season. Average is about 16 days from verification to refund issuance, but I've seen as quick as 8 days and as long as 30+ days. Important note: if you claimed certain credits (EITC, ACTC), there might be additional reviews happening simultaneously that could extend your timeline.

According to the IRS.gov processing guidelines (https://www.irs.gov/refunds/tax-season-refund-frequently-asked-questions), identity verification cases require additional processing time beyond normal returns. The current published timeframe indicates 3-6 weeks after verification, though many are reporting faster processing. I'm concerned that with the current backlog mentioned in the National Taxpayer Advocate report from April 2024, some verification cases are taking longer than the published guidelines.

Is anyone else noticing that returns with W-2G gambling income seem to trigger these verification letters more often? And why does the IRS send these letters without any warning on the WMR tool? Shouldn't there be some kind of indication that verification is needed before the letter arrives weeks later?
