TurboTax confirmed my 2023 tax filing was accepted, but IRS transcript shows "RETURN NOT PRESENT" despite listing Head of Household status - What happened to my refund?

I e-filed my 2023 taxes through TurboTax in early December 2024. I got the confirmation email from TurboTax saying it was accepted by the IRS. It's now March 2025 and I'm still waiting on my refund. I checked my transcript today and I'm so confused by what I'm seeing. At the top of my transcript it shows: ACCRUED INTEREST: 0.00 AS OF: Mar. 11, 2025 ACCRUED PENALTY: 0.00 AS OF: Mar. 11, 2025 ACCOUNT BALANCE PLUS ACCRUALS (this is not a payoff amount): 0.00 Under the "INFORMATION FROM THE RETURN OR AS ADJUSTED" section, it shows: EXEMPTIONS: 00 FILING STATUS: Head of Household ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME: [blank] TAXABLE INCOME: [blank] TAX PER RETURN: [blank] SE TAXABLE INCOME TAXPAYER: [blank] SE TAXABLE INCOME SPOUSE: [blank] TOTAL SELF EMPLOYMENT TAX: [blank] But then at the bottom it literally says "RETURN NOT PRESENT FOR THIS ACCOUNT" And under the TRANSACTIONS section it just says: CODE EXPLANATION OF TRANSACTION CYCLE DATE AMOUNT No tax return filed This Product Contains Sensitive Taxpayer Data Has anyone seen this before? I don't understand how it can show my filing status as Head of Household but then say no return was filed. Does this mean my return got lost somehow after TurboTax submitted it? I've tried calling the IRS multiple times but I can never get through to a human. I really needed this refund and now I'm worried I'll have to start all over. Should I file again? Will that make things worse? I'm so frustrated and confused.

This means the IRS has not processed your return yet or cannot locate it in their system. Despite TurboTax saying it was "accepted," that only means it passed the initial submission criteria - not that it was fully accepted for processing. You have several options: 1. Check your e-file confirmation for your submission ID number 2. Contact TurboTax to confirm the return was actually transmitted (sometimes there are transmission errors) 3. Check the "Where's My Refund" tool on the IRS website 4. Request a tax transcript by mail to verify what the IRS has on file 5. File a paper return if you can't resolve this soon (include a note explaining the situation) The "Head of Household" showing is likely just default information in their system for your account, not confirmation they received your 2023 return. This is unfortunately common with how backlogged the IRS continues to be. Don't panic, but you should take action soon.

Thanks for the detailed response. I checked the where's my refund tool but it just says "Your tax return is still being processed." Been like that for 3 months. I'll try calling TurboTax.

I had this EXACT same issue last year. TurboTax swore they submitted it but the IRS had no record. I ended up having to paper file. Such a pain.

This happens way more often than it should. The disconnect between what tax prep services tell you and what the IRS actually has is frustrating.

If you end up paper filing, make sure to send it certified mail with return receipt. That way you'll have proof the IRS received it.

Good idea about the certified mail. I'm hoping it doesn't come to that but if I have to paper file I'll definitely do that.

Turbotax is the worst. They charged me $120 last year and then my return got rejected and I had to call like 5 times to get actual help.

I was in a similar situation about 2 months ago. The transcript showed nothing but I knew I filed! I spent days trying to figure it out, calling the IRS (impossible), checking forums (endless confusing advice). Then someone recommended taxr.ai and it changed everything. It analyzed my transcript and explained exactly what was happening - turns out my return was caught in the identity verification process but hadn't triggered a letter yet. The tool showed me exactly what to do next instead of just guessing. Now my refund is processing correctly. Honestly wish I'd found it sooner instead of stressing for weeks! You should check it out at https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

Val Rossi

It does WAY more than just read the transcript. It actually explains what all the codes mean, predicts when you'll get your refund, tells you if there are any issues, and gives you specific actions to take. It's like having an IRS expert looking over your shoulder and explaining everything. I was shocked at how detailed it was.

OMG I just tried taxr.ai and it's AMAZING! My transcript had these weird codes I couldn't understand but the AI explained everything. It even predicted when my refund would arrive and it was spot on! The peace of mind alone was worth it. Everyone needs to try this, seriously!

Sounds cool but does it cost money? My return is already a mess, don't want to pay more just to figure out what's wrong

I used it and it's honestly the best money I've spent on anything tax related. Saved me from having to hire an actual tax pro which would have cost hundreds.

I was in the same situation for my 2023 taxes. Filed in November 2024, got the acceptance email but my transcript showed nothing after 4 months of waiting. Tried calling the IRS everyday for 2 weeks - USELESS! Then I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual IRS agent in under an hour. The agent explained that my return was flagged for manual review because of an earned income credit issue. Wouldn't have known otherwise. The agent even pushed it through for me, and I got my refund 2 weeks later. Talking to a real person made all the difference.

Yes! I was super skeptical too but it actually worked. They basically navigate the phone system for you and get you in line for a callback. I got a call back from an IRS agent about 45 mins after using it. Definitely beats spending hours on hold or getting disconnected constantly.

It's not a scam at all. I was desperate after trying for weeks to reach someone. The service just helps you navigate the IRS phone system and gets you in line for a callback. The only people you talk to are actual IRS agents. Best decision I made - my refund issue got resolved in one call.

I tried it yesterday and it worked! Got a call back from the IRS in about 40 minutes. The agent was able to tell me my return was just sitting there waiting to be manually processed. Definitely worth it for the peace of mind.

Are they affiliated with the IRS?

No, they're not affiliated with the IRS - they're just a service that helps you navigate the difficult IRS phone system. You still talk directly with actual IRS agents.

If the e-file was "accepted" but your transcript shows "RETURN NOT PRESENT" the most likely scenario is that your return was: 1. Initially accepted into the IRS system (basic format check passed) 2. Then rejected for some reason during the deeper processing phase 3. But you never received the rejection notification This happens ALL THE TIME with TurboTax. Check your spam folder for any emails from TurboTax about a rejection. Also log into your TurboTax account and check the status there - sometimes the website shows rejections that never got emailed.

Just checked my spam and TurboTax account. Nothing about a rejection. Just the original acceptance email from December. This is so frustrating!

Sometimes the rejection notification goes to the email you used to sign up for TurboTax, not the email you put on your tax return. Check both if they're different.

The "RETURN NOT PRESENT FOR THIS ACCOUNT" message usally means one of three things: 1. Your return is still in the processing queue and hasn't been entered into the system 2. Your return was rejected but the notification didn't reach you 3. Your return was mistakenly filed under the wrong SSN I suggest: 1. Call TurboTax and ask for your Declaration Control Number (DCN) which proves your return was transmitted 2. File Form 4506-T to request an Account Transcript which might show different info 3. Consider visiting a local Tax Advocate Service office in person for help

One thing nobody's mentioned - check if you have an online IRS account. If not, create one (irs.gov/account). Sometimes you can see more info there than on the basic Where's My Refund tool. My transcript showed the same message last year but my online account had a message about identity verification being required.

I created an IRS account a few weeks ago. That's how I accessed this transcript. There are no messages or alerts showing in my account.

I just went through this exact situation. My return was showing as accepted through TurboTax but the IRS had no record. I finally got through to someone after THREE MONTHS of trying and they told me my return had been flagged for potential identity theft. They never sent me a notice or anything! I had to verify my identity through ID.me and then my return started processing about 2 weeks later. Check if that might be your issue.

Did you e-file with a bank product (like refund advance or having fees taken out of your refund)? If so, sometimes the third-party bank is the one that actually submits to the IRS and there can be issues at that step. Worth checking with TurboTax to see if that might be the issue.

0 coins

-

Hugh Intensity

Yes! I did get the refund advance thing where they take the TurboTax fee out of my refund. I didn't think about that being an issue.

That's probably it then! When you use that service, your return actually goes to the bank first (usually Santa Barbara Tax Products Group or similar), then they submit it to the IRS. Sometimes there's a breakdown in that chain. Call TurboTax and specifically ask about the status with the bank partner.

File a paper copy. Whenever I have e-file issues I just file a paper copy and it gets processed eventually. Electronic is usually faster but paper is more reliable when there are system issues.

This actually happened to me and I found out it was because I had entered my birth date incorrectly on TurboTax. One digit off! The return was technically accepted but then got kicked back because of the birth date mismatch with their records. But TurboTax never notified me. Check your personal information in your TurboTax account.

Former tax preparer here. The "RETURN NOT PRESENT" message is misleading. It doesn't necessarily mean your return wasn't received - it means it hasn't been fully processed and entered into the system that generates transcripts. The IRS has different databases and systems that don't always talk to each other properly. The fact that your filing status shows up means they have some record of you. I've seen returns sit in this status for 2-3 months during busy season. However, since it's been more than 3 months, you should absolutely follow up. The e-file acceptance only means it passed initial validation, not that it was fully processed. If possible, try to get confirmation from TurboTax that it wasn't rejected after initial acceptance.

You know what's crazy, my transcript had this exact issue. I spent hours trying to decipher it myself, trying all kinds of keywords and Google searches. I ended up using taxr.ai to read the transcript and it pointed out something I totally missed - there was a TC 570 code hidden on another page that was holding up my return. It explained exactly what that meant and what to do about it. Saved me from filing a duplicate return which would have made things worse! Check it out if you're still stuck like I was https://taxr.ai

It's definitely not a scam. It's just an AI tool that reads your transcript and explains what's happening. I was skeptical too but it actually gave me specific info about my situation that was super helpful. Better than the generic advice I got from calling the IRS (when I finally got through after days of trying).

I looked into it. It's an AI tool that was built specifically to decipher tax transcripts and IRS notices. Pretty neat idea actually since most of us have no idea what all those codes mean.

If you file for an extension, you have until October 15th to file. But the IRS doesn't actually care if you file even later than that as long as you're owed a refund. If you owe them money, then they'll charge penalties for filing late.

Ah that makes sense. I always file in February so I had no idea you could file that late.

You can actually file up to 3 years late if you're owed a refund. After that, you lose the refund.

It took me literally 63 DAYS to get through to the IRS on the phone. Then 5 minutes to resolve my issue. I finally broke down and used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through immediately. Best decision ever - resolved my "return not present" issue in a single call. Turns out my return was flagged for manual review because I had entered an incorrect AGI from the previous year. The IRS never sent me any notice about this. Talking to a human was the only way to figure it out.

CHECK IF YOU GOT A 5071C LETTER! Sometimes they send these letters requiring identity verification but the letters get lost in the mail. My transcript showed exactly what yours does and it turned out I needed to verify my identity. You can check if this applies to you by going to idverify.irs.gov and trying to verify - it will tell you if there's a verification request on your account.

0 coins

-

I just tried that site and it says "We could not verify your identity." Does that mean there isn't a verification request or that I failed verification?

I actually just went through this with my SO's taxes. Turns out TurboTax had a system glitch where returns showed as "accepted" on their end but never actually transmitted to the IRS. We had to re-file completely. Check with TurboTax and specifically ask if there were any transmission issues around the time you filed.
