Need Help Understanding My IRS Transcript Showing "No Tax Return Filed" - Filed in February but 2023 Return Shows as Not Present
I filed my taxes early February and got all these codes on my transcripts that I don't understand. I just received my transcript today (04-23-2024) after requesting it yesterday. I've attached an image of my Account Transcript from the IRS and I'm completely confused. The transcript shows: Internal Revenue Service United States Department of the Treasury Request Date: 04-22-2024 Response Date: 04-22-2024 It's for Tax Period: Dec. 31, 2023 for Form 1040. My filing status shows as Head of Household, but then there's all these sections that say: ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME: [blank] TAXABLE INCOME: [blank] TAX PER RETURN: [blank] Then at the bottom it says "RETURN NOT PRESENT FOR THIS ACCOUNT" and under TRANSACTIONS it says "No tax return filed" with no cycle date or amount. My account balance shows $0.00, with $0.00 accrued interest and $0.00 accrued penalty as of May 07, 2024. I'm expecting a refund but this transcript makes it look like I never even filed! I definitely filed in early February - it's been over a month now and I'm getting really worried. Why would it say "No tax return filed" when I definitely filed? Does this mean they lost my return? Or is it still processing? Can someone help me read this and tell me what's going on with my refund? I don't understand all these blank fields and what "RETURN NOT PRESENT FOR THIS ACCOUNT" actually means.

Hey there! Let me help break down those transcript codes for you. The IRS uses specific codes to track different actions on your return - its like their secret language lol. But honestly, trying to interpret these codes manually can be pretty confusing. I've found taxr.ai super helpful for this - it's an AI tool that analyzes your transcript and explains everything in plain English. Just upload your transcript and it'll tell you exactly what each code means and when you can expect your refund. Here's the link: https://taxr.ai

The most important codes to look for are the 846 (refund issued), 570 (hold), and 971 (notice sent). Without seeing your specific codes though, its hard to tell whats happening with your return. You should share what codes you see so we can help interpret them.

•thanks for replying! i see a 150 code and a 570 code from last week. what does that mean?

•570 means theres a hold on your account. You'll probably get a letter explaining why. Could be identity verification or they need more documentation.

Instead of trying to piece together what all these codes mean, you should check out taxr.ai - its this new tool that analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly whats happening and when youll likely get paid. Way better than playing detective with random codes! Its only $4.99 and totally worth it https://taxr.ai

Did you claim EIC or child tax credit? Those usually take longer to process

Hey Miguel! I see you have a 150 code and 570 code - that's actually pretty common. The 150 means your return was received and processed, but the 570 is a hold code that freezes your refund. Since you filed in February and claimed EIC and child tax credit, those typically add extra processing time anyway. The "No tax return filed" message is probably just a delay in their system updating - it doesn't mean they lost your return. You should get a notice in the mail explaining the hold. In the meantime, you can check your account transcript weekly to see if the hold gets released (look for an 571 code). Hang in there!
