IRS transcript shows "RETURN NOT PRESENT" despite TurboTax acceptance in March - $3,450 refund missing

I submitted my 2024 tax return through TurboTax on March 15th and got an acceptance notification the same day. TurboTax has been telling me my refund should have been deposited by April 5th, but when I check my bank account there's nothing there. I decided to check my transcript today (April 17th) and I'm completely confused by what I'm seeing. When I logged into the IRS website today, I pulled my Account Transcript and here's what it shows: Internal Revenue Service United States Department of the Treasury This Product Contains Sensitive Taxpayer Data Request Date: 02-24-2025 Response Date: 02-24-2025 Tracking Number: 10. Account Transcript FORM NUMBER: 1040 TAX PERIOD: Dec. 31, 2024 ANY MINUS SIGN SHOWN BELOW SIGNIFIES A CREDIT AMOUNT ACCOUNT BALANCE: 0.00 ACCRUED INTEREST: 0.00 AS OF: Mar. 10, 2025 ACCRUED PENALTY: 0.00 AS OF: Mar. 10, 2025 ACCOUNT BALANCE PLUS ACCRUALS (this is not a payoff amount): 0.00 INFORMATION FROM THE RETURN OR AS ADJUSTED EXEMPTIONS: 00 FILING STATUS: Head of Household ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME: TAXABLE INCOME: TAX PER RETURN: SE TAXABLE INCOME TAXPAYER: SE TAXABLE INCOME SPOUSE: TOTAL SELF EMPLOYMENT TAX: RETURN NOT PRESENT FOR THIS ACCOUNT TRANSACTIONS CODE EXPLANATION OF TRANSACTION CYCLE DATE AMOUNT No tax return filed This Product Contains Sensitive Taxpayer Data I'm absolutely confused because it says "RETURN NOT PRESENT FOR THIS ACCOUNT" and "No tax return filed" at the bottom of the transactions section. How can this be when TurboTax confirmed my acceptance on March 15th? I filed as Head of Household, which is correctly shown on the transcript, but there's no other information filled in. I'm supposed to be getting back around $3,450 and I was really counting on this money for some urgent bills. Is there something wrong with my return? Did it somehow get lost in the IRS system after the acceptance notification? Should I be contacting the IRS directly or resubmitting my taxes through TurboTax? Has anyone else experienced this discrepancy between TurboTax acceptance and the IRS transcript showing no return filed?

Noah Lee

Your return is likely just in the processing queue. The IRS is dealing with extremely high volumes and many returns are taking longer than usual this year. The 'No tax return filed' message appears when your return has been received but hasn't been fully processed into their system yet. A few things to check: 1. Verify your TurboTax acceptance was from the IRS, not just an acknowledgment that TurboTax received your submission 2. Check the Where's My Refund tool on IRS.gov to see if there's any status info there 3. Make sure your banking details were entered correctly on your return 4. If you claimed certain credits (like Earned Income Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit), your refund may be delayed automatically for additional review I'd recommend waiting another week or two before taking action. If nothing changes by early May, then consider contacting the IRS directly, but be prepared for very long wait times.

Thanks for the detailed response. I did check Where's My Refund and it only says "Your tax return is still being processed." I triple-checked my banking info on TurboTax and it's correct. And yes, I did claim child tax credit. Guess I'll wait a bit longer.

My return looked EXACTLY like this for literally 4 months last year. Just hang tight!

The IRS is a joke this year. Nobody answers phones, nobody processes returns on time, and we're all just supposed to wait patiently 🤡

If you need clarity on what's happening with your return, I'd recommend using taxr.ai instead of trying to figure it out from these confusing transcripts. It's an AI tool that analyzes your transcript and explains everything in plain English - shows processing timeline, identifies issues, translates codes, and tells you exactly what's happening with your refund. I was in your same situation and it explained exactly why my return was delayed and when to expect my money. Way better than guessing or waiting on hold forever with the IRS. Check it out at https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It's amazing actually! You upload your transcript and it breaks down every code, date, and transaction. It told me my refund was delayed because of an income verification check but that it would be released on a specific date - and it was exactly right! Saved me hours of research and stress. Best tax tool I've ever found!

I've been seeing this recommended everywhere. Does it actually work with complicated tax situations?

OMG YES!! I had a super complicated return with self-employment, rental income, and an amended return from 2023. The taxr tool explained EVERYTHING - even caught that I was getting interest on my delayed refund that I wouldn't have known about. Everyone should be using this instead of trying to decipher IRS codes like we're all tax experts!

I was in your exact situation after filing in mid-March. Tried calling the IRS over and over but couldn't get through. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me on the phone with an actual IRS agent within an hour. They confirmed my return was received but got flagged for manual review. The agent was able to release my refund while I was on the phone! Talking to an actual person solved everything in 15 minutes instead of weeks of waiting and wondering.

Really? This actually works? I'm suspicious of anything that claims to get through to the IRS...

I was skeptical too but desperate after waiting 7 weeks. The service reserves your spot in the IRS phone queue and calls you when an agent is available. Absolutely worth it - best decision I made after stressing for weeks about my $2,800 refund. Got it deposited 3 days after speaking with the agent.

Worth every penny for the peace of mind alone. I was losing sleep worrying about my refund. The IRS agent told me my return would have been sitting there for another month if I hadn't called. With the money I needed so badly sitting just a phone call away, it was the best investment I've made all year.

Just to be clear - the transcript you posted is showing that the IRS doesn't have your return fully in the system yet. Despite TurboTax saying it was "accepted," there's a difference between the initial acknowledgment and full processing. The cycle date shows 02-24-2025 but your return was filed 03-15-2025, so this transcript was probably generated before your return was fully integrated into their system.

That makes sense. I didn't realize there was a difference between acceptance and processing. The dates explain a lot. Thank you!

Lol welcome to tax season 2025! 🤡 IRS is moving slower than ever this year. My BIL filed Jan 28 and just got his refund yesterday. All u can do is wait or try to call (good luck with that tho).

I'm a tax preparer and we're seeing a LOT of this issue this year. The 'RETURN NOT PRESENT FOR THIS ACCOUNT' message is happening even when returns are definitely accepted. Two things to try: 1) Use the 'Where's My Refund' tool on the IRS website instead of relying on TurboTax's estimates, and 2) check your transcript again in a week as they're updating batches of returns on Fridays. If you claimed any of the recovery rebate credits or child tax credits, that automatically puts you in a slower processing queue.

Is there any truth to the rumor that filing early actually makes processing take longer? I filed Feb 1 and still waiting while my sister filed April 10 and already got her refund.

0 coins

-

Caden Nguyen

Not exactly, but certain batches get processed differently. Early filers with EITC/CTC had an automatic hold until mid-February. Also, returns with certain deductions or credits are put in different review queues. It's not strictly first-come-first-served anymore. The system is a mess this year.

This is why I always recommend filing in March - early enough to not be late but late enough to avoid being in the big January rush where more problems happen.

i had this exact same problem. turned out my ss# was off by one digit when i entered it. check all ur info VERY carefully and maybe file an amended return if needed. u might have made a simple mistake and the irs just rejects without telling u why.

-

Olivia Garcia

That's a good point, but I double-checked my info when I filed. TurboTax said it was accepted so I don't think there was a mistake with my SSN.

Hey OP - I literally just went thru this exact thing. Your transcript looks *exactly* how mine did. My refund finally came thru yesterday after 6 weeks of waiting. Don't panic, the system is just backed up.

That's so good to hear! Did yours update with any codes before the refund came or did it just show up?

My transcript updated like 3 days before the deposit hit. Suddenly had all these codes (846, 570, 971) and then boom - money in account. Just hang tight!

This happend to me 2. I sent my 2024 return begin of april. My transcript looks exactly like yours for 3 weeks now. Did you try to call the IRS? I tried 15 times but can't get through. Starting to worry now cause i need my refund to pay some bills

If you get desperate and need to talk to someone at the IRS, I recently learned a trick. Call right when they open (7am their local time) and select the option for "making a payment" instead of "refund status" - they answer those calls way faster and can still help with your refund once you get through.

Tried this. Still on hold for 1 hour before being disconnected. The entire system is broken.

I work at a tax firm. What you're seeing is totally normal. The transcript just means your return is in the queue but hasn't been fully processed yet. TurboTax gives estimated dates based on normal processing times, but those estimates are meaningless when the IRS is backed up. With no notices or errors, you just need to wait. But if you're really worried, check the Where's My Refund tool daily - it'll update before your transcript does.

Yo check the "Where's My Refund" tool on the IRS website. It's way more accurate than what TurboTax tells you. I had this EXACT situation and it turned out my return was fine but TurboTax's estimates were way off.

I did check that too but it just says "Your return is still being processed" with no other details. Not very helpful 😕

Ah that sucks. Yeah that's the IRS equivalent of "please hold" 🙄 If it makes you feel better mine was stuck on that for almost 5 weeks before it updated.

Have you tried using taxr.ai? I was in your exact situation last month and spent hours trying to decode my transcript with no luck. The taxr tool explained everything - showed me exactly where my return was in processing and even predicted when my refund would come through (and it was spot on!) Seriously saved my sanity during this whole process. https://taxr.ai

YES! It explains every single code, date, and amount. It even calculated the interest the IRS owes me because of the delay. So much better than trying to piece everything together from random internet posts.

Its soooo annoying but this is totally normal. My transcript looked like this for SIX WEEKS before it updated. The IRS is severely understaffed and they process returns in batches. Basically your return is in digital limbo - received but not yet fully uploaded to their system. Unless you get a letter from them saying there's a problem, just keep waiting.

Justin Evans

The IRS is still using computer systems from the 1960s to process returns. I'm not even joking - they run on COBOL programming language which barely anyone knows anymore. That's why everything is so slow and cryptic. Your return is probably fine, just stuck in their ancient system.

My dad was a COBOL programmer in the 80s... maybe he should apply to the IRS lol

Yep, and they're losing their experienced staff faster than they can train replacements. The whole system is held together with digital duct tape at this point. 😬

I had the exact same situation, but even weirder - my transcript looked like yours for 4 weeks, then one day my refund just appeared in my account without any updates to the transcript or WMR tool. A week AFTER I got my money, the transcript finally updated. The system is completely broken this year.

I had this EXACT issue. Used a service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual IRS person (after trying to call for weeks with no luck). They confirmed my return was stuck in review but hadn't been assigned to anyone. The agent manually released it while I was on the phone and I had my refund 8 days later. Seriously, if you need your money, try claimyr.com - saved me weeks of waiting and uncertainty.

Honestly it was worth every penny for me. I needed my $4200 refund for car repairs and medical bills. Talking to an agent got everything resolved in minutes instead of potentially waiting months. The peace of mind alone was worth it.

I was so desperate after waiting 10 weeks that I tried Claimyr too. Agent told me my return was stuck because of a simple verification issue that would have taken months to resolve by mail. Got everything fixed in one call and refund deposited a week later!

TurboTax's estimated dates are total BS. They're just automated generic timelines that ignore how backed up the IRS actually is. Ignore those dates completely and just check Where's My Refund or your transcript for updates.

Hot tip: go to https://irs.gov/refunds and check your status there. It's the most accurate source for refund status. TurboTax estimates are just that - estimates. Your return hasn't been fully processed yet.
