IRS Letter Says No Return Filed Despite Tax Software Acceptance - Received "Verification of Non-Filing" Letter Dated Jan 23, 2025
Filed my taxes and got acceptance confirmation but something weird is happening. When I checked ID.me and looked at my transcripts it shows no return filed yet? But I got the acceptance already in test batch. I received a letter from the IRS dated January 23, 2025 that states: "Information About the Request We Received. On January 24, 2025, we received a request for verification of non-filing of a tax return. As of the date of this letter, we have no record of a processed tax return for the tax period listed above." What's confusing me is that I already filed and got an acceptance confirmation from the tax software I used. But this letter clearly states they have "no record of a processed tax return." Is there a lag between when tax software says your return is accepted and when it actually shows up in the IRS system? The letter says "If you have any questions, you can call 800-829-1040" but before I spend hours on hold, has anyone else experienced this discrepancy between getting an acceptance confirmation but then having the IRS say they don't have your return? This is making me really nervous about my refund status. Super confused about this discrepancy anyone else dealing with this??

Tax pro here - this is actually pretty normal. The 'accepted' status just means the IRS received your return, but processing hasn't started yet. Your transcripts won't update until the return actually enters the processing stage. Could take 5-21 days for that to happen depending on the current backlog.
