Tax refund showing approved for direct deposit on 3/15 but still nothing in my account and SBTPG shows no info

Filed my taxes back in early February and the WMR tool shows my refund was approved with direct deposit date of 3/15. It's now been over two weeks and I still haven't received anything in my bank account. I checked the Santa Barbara Tax Products Group website and they don't show any information for my account at all. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this kind of delay after getting an approved status? I'm starting to get worried since I was counting on that money.

This could be happening for several reasons. First, check if you had your tax preparation fees taken out of your refund - if so, your money goes through SBTPG before coming to you, adding time. Also, the IRS might have sent a paper check instead of direct deposit if there was any issue with your banking info. Check the tax transcript on the IRS website if you can access it - it will show the actual refund status more accurately than WMR. Look for code 846 which means refund issued. If your transcript shows the refund was sent but SBTPG has no record, call your bank to verify they didn't reject the deposit. Sometimes banks hold larger deposits for review. If it's been more than 21 days since you filed, you can call the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040, though wait times are usually long. Some people have had success using the Claimyr app (claimyr.com) to get a callback from the IRS without the excessive wait.

Thanks for the detailed response. I did have my prep fees taken out so that makes sense why SBTPG is involved. I'll try to check my transcript today.

I had the EXACT same issue last year! SBTPG was showing nothing but IRS said it was sent. Turned out my bank flagged it as suspicious and was holding it. Call your bank asap!

Calling the IRS is literally the worst. I spent 3 hours on hold last week and got disconnected. Might try that Claimyr thing you mentioned.

Listen, I've been down this road and spent WEEKS trying to figure out what was happening with my refund. Found this tool called taxr.ai that finally made sense of everything - it reads your transcript and explains what's actually happening in plain English. So much better than trying to piece together random bits of info from forums like this. Honestly saved me so much stress when I was in your situation. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It analyzes your whole transcript and explains every code, date, and amount. Even predicts your refund date based on patterns. I was stuck in processing for months and taxr showed me exactly why - had a review code I didn't understand. EVERYONE dealing with the IRS should use this! It's like having a tax pro in your pocket but way cheaper.

OMG just tried it and WOW!!! I've been staring at my transcript for weeks not understanding why my refund was delayed. Taxr showed me I had a hold code that even my accountant missed! Literally took 2 minutes to explain everything. This should be pinned to the top of every tax forum seriously 🙌

After dealing with a similar issue (refund stuck in limbo), I finally got someone on the phone using Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they helped me track down my refund. Turned out there was a hold they never told me about, and talking to a live agent got it released within days. Spent two months trying to call myself before that with no luck. Paying a few bucks to finally talk to an agent and get my $3000 refund unstuck was absolutely worth it!

Is that app thing actually real? Sounds too good to be true tbh

100% real. I was skeptical too, but I was desperate after trying for weeks. They got me connected with an IRS agent in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for hours on my own. The agent I talked to was able to see exactly what was happening with my refund and remove the hold.

Those calling services are just exploting a loophole. The IRS should be accessible to EVERYONE not just ppl who can pay 😤

I mean, ideally yes. But I spent like 12+ hours trying to call myself with no success. Whatever they're doing works, and I got my $3k refund that was just sitting there. Worth every penny for me.

Did you file through TurboTax, H&R Block or any of those services? If so, did you opt to have your prep fees taken out of your refund? That would explain why SBTPG is involved - they're the bank that handles the refund transfers for many tax prep companies.

Call your bank! I had this exact issue and it turned out my bank put a hold on the deposit bc it was a large amount. They never notified me! After I called they released it that same day. Ridiculous.

I called my bank and they don't see anything pending or any rejected deposits. So frustrating.

Ugh that sucks. If the WMR tool says direct deposit 3/15 and nothing has changed, you should call the IRS. The number is actually impossible to get through to tho. 😩

mine showed DD date of 3/17 and didnt hit my account until yesterday (3/30). the whole system is broken this year. some people are getting them fast and others are waiting forever. if WMR still shows approved than your probably fine just gotta wait unfortunately

Thanks, that gives me some hope. Did yours ever show up on the SBTPG site before you got it?

Did you double check that the direct deposit info on your return is correct? I had a friend who had the wrong account number by one digit and her refund got rejected and they had to mail a paper check which took an additional 6-8 weeks 😬

The IRS is an absolute joke this year. I filed in January and STILL waiting on my refund with no explanation. At this point they should be paying us interest. 🤬

They actually do pay interest if its delayed past a certain point! small consolation but better than nothing lol

Oh really?? How much is it? Might be the only way I'll ever get anything from them at this rate

I think its like 7% annual rate. So not huge but at least something. It gets added automatically

I USE TO WORK AT THE IRS. If it's been over 21 days since your return was accepted, you can and should call them. WMR isn't always accurate. The most common reasons for delay after an approval are: incorrect banking info, bank rejection, offset due to past debts, or a fraudulent return flag.

Thank you! Do you know the best number to call? I tried the main one and couldn't get through.

1-800-829-1040 is still the best number, but you need to call right when they open (7am local time) and be prepared to wait. Select options 1 → 2 → 1 → 3 → 2 when prompted, then dont enter ssn when asked and you'll eventually get a person. Or use a service like claimyr.com which many people have success with.

SBTPG is the worst. Last year they held my refund for nearly 2 weeks with zero communication. If they are involved (because you had fees taken out of refund) then that's likely your issue. Sometimes calling them helps but their customer service is terrible.

Check your tax transcript on the IRS website!!! The WMR tool is notoriously unreliable. Your transcript will show the actual codes and whatnot. Look for code 846 which means refund issued. That'll tell you if it actually went out or not.

I've been trying to access my transcript but keep getting an error. Will try again though.

The transcript system is always overloaded during tax season. Try really early morning or late at night. And if you still can't access it, taxr.ai can help interpret it once you get in. That's what I used when I was confused about all those codes.

Its probably going to come as a paper check. This happened to me when my direct deposit info had an issue - the IRS never told me, just switched to mailing a paper check which took 4 more weeks. Check WMR daily to see if status changes.

Has anybody actually been able to talk to SBTPG?? I've been calling for days and can't get through to a human being... 😡

I gave up on them and just used claimyr.com to get the IRS directly. Turns out SBTPG never even received my refund even though WMR said it was sent. The IRS agent was able to see exactly what happened and fixed it.

Thanks! might try that if I don't hear anything by end of week

Just a heads up - the Where's My Refund tool updates overnight, not in real time. If u check during the day nothing changes, but check first thing in the morning to see the latest status.
